Aura of Courage

Rules Questions

It states that Paladin gains immunity to fear. Not fear effects, just fear. Does that mean that Paladins can be affected by say, Phantasmal Killer and similar things or no?

Has this issue been adressed already?

I am pretty sure a fear effect causes fear....

Phantasmal Killer (which has a Fear descriptor) kills you.

Kills you... with fear... which you are immune to...

Looking at it RAI, it does make sense. But by RAW... It's a bit unclear.

EDIT: It could be that it makes you immune to fear and you gain a bonus on other fear effects.

What fear isn't a fear effect?

Fear is a fear effect, of course. but there are other stuff, like I said, Phantasmal Killer and the likes.

Since it doesn't specifically states that you are immune to fear effects, I'm looking for an answer here.

Okay so if you aren't immune to fear effects what in game thing are you immune to?

If he was immune only to fear spell then there would not be (magical or otherwise) addition. So it is fear effects.
Note that Divine Health also mentions all diseases not disease effects in similar vein and still it means Paladin is immune to all disease effects.

Presumably the panicked, shaken, and cowering conditions.

Phantasmal Killer is a mind-affecting, fear effect; it even has this descriptor. A Paladin with Aura of Courage is completely immune to this spell.

Basically any effect generated by fear (it will say this in the effects description i.e. "This is a mind affecting, fear effect") will have no effect on a Paladin, such as a Mummy's despair ability. That includes any spell with the 'fear' descriptor, such as Phantasmal Killer, Weird, Symbol of Fear, Doom, etc.. This also would include anything that would cause a fear effect to occur, such as using Intimidate to demoralize a Paladin; the attempt would be futile.
