I was hoping to find a way to create a magical item that mirrors the PHANTOM STEED 3rd level spell in the Pathfinder Core rulebook on page 319, but able to attack like a normal Heavy Warhorse. Or, make one out of stone or metal.
Put simply, the problem I am trying to solve is that mounts don't seem all that useful at higher levels, even with the feats. Not to say that the abilities given by the right feats aren't cool, but sooner or later someone is going to attack your warhorse/riding dog. At low level, this isn't that big a problem. At higher levels, though, your mount becomes at best a nuisance, at worst a snack. I am not playing a druid or paladin so Animal Companion/Special Mount doesn't come into play. Is there a way to make mounts better without those abilities?
Stone Horse was a great magical item for 3.5, but Pathfinder doesn't seem to have anything like that. Any way to fix this?

I have just the magic item for you:
Stone Horse
Each item of this nature appears to be a fullsized, roughly hewn statue of a horse, carved from some type of hard stone. A command word brings the steed to life, enabling it to carry a burden and even to attack as if it were a real horse of the appropriate kind.
A stone horse can carry 1,000 pounds tirelessly and never needs to rest or feed. Damage dealt to it can be repaired by first using a stone to flesh spell, thus causing the stone horse to become a normal horse that can be healed normally. When fully healed, it automatically reverts to its stone form. While in its stone form, it can be fed gems, healing 1 point of damage for each 50 gp worth of mineral it is given.
There are two sorts of stone horses.
Courser
This item has the statistics of a heavy horse as well as having hardness 10.
Destrier
This item has the statistics of a heavy warhorse as well as having hardness 10.
Strong transmutation; CL 14th; Craft Wondrous Item, flesh to stone, animate objects; Price 10,000 gp (courser) or 14,800 gp (destrier); Weight 6,000 lb.

Totally sweet magic horse
Why not have mending function as a healing spell for it?
Stone Horse would be great, but it's not in the Pathfinder Books that I have. My GM is pretty major about keeping with what's in the book, so I'm kinda stuck.
I believe mounts can have magic armor in the form of barding which can be enchanted. Other than that you could take the leadership feat to get a non-standard mount such as a griffon (if your GM allows).

Thanks, I already have magical armor on the horse, but it's the HP and BAB that's really the issue. Fighting on a warhorse that's a 1 CR creature at 6th level or better is almost suicidal for the mount. The leadership feat is possible, but I don't see how a mount becomes a Cohort myself. I can see the possibility, but that would seem a bit expensive, charging a feat for a mount.

Talisman of the Summoned Steed
It is in the Taldor companion. The stats are not any better than a regular horse but it may be an OK back up to help insure late combat round spirited charges.

I would simply make a magic item of Phantom Steed and use that. If you're not playing a Druid, Ranger, Paladin, or Cavalier, you probably shouldn't have a mount that can actually fight well enough to deal damage to high level foes, but a Heavy Warhorse can't do that anyway. For everything except attacking, Phantom Steed is unbeatable!

Try the Ivory Goat of Traveling Figurine of Wondrous Power.
And mounts usually aren't good at high levels because people can fly or teleport - and also don't usually wonder around in open fields. No one needs a mount except for those classes that specifically provide and improve one. Hell, Phantom Steed isn't a mount strictly speaking.
You can just get an item that let's you fly for 54k gold.
