Just out of curiosity, if someone got a typed bonus of +2 and the same type of penalty of -3, do they:
1. Stack for a -1 even though they aren't supposed to be added together
2. Go with the +2 because it is better
3. Go with the -3 because the penalty is greater than the bonus, sorta.
Preface: It is my understanding that penalties stack. You could get into a lot of trouble with many penalties.
If the two items you are describing are indeed a bonus and then a penalty they are different and thus effect one another for a -1.
If they are both "bonuses" then the higher bonus applies.
If they are penalties then both apply.

yes in general bonuses and penalty's stack, to the extend that the combined total of say a +2 enhancement and -3 enhancement to str. would give a total of -1 enhancement to str.
There is a commen misconception though, and that is that all penalty's stack with other penaltys. They in fact follow the exact same rules as bonuses on that point, and thus two different enhancement modifiers to strength wont stack. This is just easily overlooked, as most penaltys dont have a type, and thus stacks with everything else. (unless otherwise noted in the effect description, like ray of enfeebelment that dosnt stack with itself, but everything else, even though it dosnt have a type)
Hope that cleared it up for you.
Nicklas
and just to be curious, what made you ask the question? ie what kinda penalty actually have the same type as a bonus, couse right now i cant think of one.

I see what you mean! Penalty: Penalties are numerical values that are subtracted from a check or statistical score. Penalties do not have a type and most penalties stack with one another.
Thanks Nicklas
Hypothetical: If you have 2 penalties to strength, both -2 (from different sources), it would become -4, no?
I guess what I'm asking is: are the only penalties that don't stack ones that come from the same source?

Yep, you got it. :)
It's a little blurry when magic items and spells are mixed together though. Say a target is hit with ray of enfeeblement and then is also hit with a magic item which has RoE as a prerequisite for creation. The prereqs are not specifically because of the effect created by the magic item, so would the magic item be "the same source"? It's a GM call, but IME most ignore it and say it's not the same source.
