Bow of Subtlety

Advice

Just wondering whether there'd be any balance issues involved in having a bow with a sword of subtlety's properties:

Sword of Subtlety
Aura moderate illusion; CL 7th Slot none; Price 22,310 gp; Weight 2 lbs.

A +1 short sword with a thin, dull gray blade, this weapon provides a +4 bonus on its wielder's attack and damage rolls when he is making a sneak attack with it.

Construction Requirements Craft Magic Arms and Armor, blur; Cost 11,310 gp

I think the price is off, just a little. I'd make it 25,000gp. It's better than a +2, but not as good as a +3, but it's closer to a +3 than a +2.

Are you talking about the property in general or bow of subtlety in particular?

On the bow. It allows a significant boost to ranged sneak attack. Granted, it's harder to do a ranged sneak attack, but it's still a significant boost to it, and allows the boost without putting the rogue in harms way.

Just my 0.02 worth though.

EDIT: Don't think it would be overpowered, just that there should be a small bump in price for making it ranged.

As a rule of thumb, you have to substract the actual weapon's price, and that will give you the price of the ability.

For instance:
22,310 - 2,310 (the price of the +1 [masterwork] short sword) = 20,000

So if you want a bow of subtlety, pick your magic bow, like a +2 distance short bow (18,330 gp), and add 20,000 gp to the price, for a total of 38,330 gp.

Would it be balanced, yes it is. Why ? because sneak attacks must be done from maximum 30 feet away.

A ranged weapon of Subtlety would be LESS powerful than a melee weapon because the ability to even get Sneak Attacks is lessened. I would say a minimal decrease in price. And since mdt, in his infinite wisdom, said it should be increased for exactly the same reason, obviously the price increase to a magic weapon should be exactly proportional to the one for a sword of the same enchantment.

I feel much more confident of my response now for some reason.

I don't agree, I think the price is off.

I'm aware this item is on p477, but I don't think it should be priced as it is in the core book. This weapon is just as valuable in the hands of someone with sneak as a +4. A +4 weapon costs 32,000 gp. So this weapon should cost 32,000 with maybe a slight discount if anything. I wouldn't price it below 30,000 gp.

None of this speaks to ranged items, and due to ranged sneak being harder to get I can see the price being allowed for ranged.
