Changing / removing magic item abilities

Rules Questions

I know you can upgrade a magic sword, turning a +1 longsword in a +2 longsword, or a +1 keen longsword and just pay the difference for it.

But can you also change/remove some abilities?

For example: I have a +1 keen longsword (cost equivalent of a +2 weapon)
Now I got the Improved Critical feat and so keen doesn't do anything for me anymore. So I want to change the sword in a +2 longsword.

Would that work and if so how much would it cost? Is there a rule for it somewhere?

I know I could basicly sunder my own weapon, then have it mended which turns it into a normal MW weapon again, and then start over with enchanting from scratch. But that seems a bit harsh.

Would it be fair to say for example "Ok removing the keen ability costs nothing, it's now a normal +1 longsword again, and enchanting it to +2 costs the normal 6000 again"?

If you're going to spend 6000 anyway, just sell the item (get 4000) and buy a +2 sword (8000)

Save yourself 2000, spending only 4000 in the process.

This is of course assuming you can get to a metropolitan area where a +2 longsword would be available.

To answer your question...no, you can't swap abilities.

Besides, the sale and purchase would be instantaneous, whereas rearranging the abilities would take a week.

I know it would take time.
But lets assume there's a RP reason for not wanting to actually get a new sword, I think there should be a way to remove some abilities. It's not like it happens often, usually you would add new stuff ontop instead of removing something.

Aside from destroying the item and starting from scrath with the same materials (like Anduril from LotR)...nope.

Well the Mending spell takes care of the reforging, it turns a magic item into a masterwork one.
So guess thats the only way then, thanks.

Most likely just doesn't happen often enough that it would be worth a rule.

I'm got a similar problem. I'm playing a Arcane Dualist (Bard) who has a arcane-bonded shortbow, and I've given it the holy weapon quality through the bond.

Now we're posing as evil-doers so the holy weapon could blow our cover. I want to change my arcane bond to some other ability, but according to the rules it's like crafting in all ways except when explicity stated in the arcane bond description.

So I can never change my arcane bond? Or can I "erase" it and start over? Or perhaps using the "rebonding" ritual (wait one week, pay 200 gp per level) would be appropriate, but I always assumed that would simply recreate the abilities I had already had in a new item, so it would probably do the same if I rebonded the shortbow.

It seems to me I would have to erase it and start over. Any thoughts?

Ok it seems I've over looked something.

If the object of an arcane bond is lost or destroyed, it can be replaced after 1 week in a special ritual that costs 200 gp per wizard level plus the cost of the masterwork item. This ritual takes 8 hours to complete. Items replaced in this way do not possess any of the additional enchantments of the previous bonded item.

Specifically that last sentence. So "rebonding" erases the old abilities.

I should really reread the content before posting.

How about the situation where your good party defeats evil opponents and get their loot. The boss has a +3 Keen Unholy Long Sword. Being a good party, you won't use that weapon nor do you want to sell an unholy weapon. Destroying it is certainly an option but being able to remove the Unholy and then having a weapon that is useful or able to sell would benefit the party.

@Furt

Why not just use Magic Aura on it?

@Qatar

Run it by your GM -- I can't really see him (or her) not letting a skilled magic crafter strip off an ability with a little work. If you want to keep the particular sword instead of trading it out.
