Is there any way to make this board slightly better by allowing anyone who replies to a thread the ability to subscribe to that thread, whether automatically through profile options or through the post composing/edit window?
I lose track of so many posts because I have no way of knowing when people reply to threads I've posted in, or just want to track out of interest, and eventually forget about them. I have to go to my profile and click "view recent posts". Sure there's the focus link, which I'm only recently aware of that is nearly invisible, but that still doesn't let me know when a new reply has been made to a thread I've replied to.
This board is hard enough to navigate as is, and I know there's not much that can be done about that, but at least knowing when a thread you've replied to has had a new reply would help that much more as it would have a link back to that thread.

The focus link is really what you're looking for. Threads you've posted in have a little black dot, and threads you've visited with new posts have a little (X-new). Threads that you've posted in that have new posts have both.
No. You missed my point. Those are fine for anyone who intends to refresh the board ever few minutes/hours/days whatever. Being subscribed to a thread means you are notified in email when a new post has been submitted to a thread you started or replied to. That's why the topic of this thread is regarding Subscribing to thread. I'm aware of the focus and the bullet and the new features. They DO NOT notify you when there's a new post though unless you refresh the screen or return to the message board to check.

The best way to do what you are asking is an RSS feed. A link is at the top of each page. Its not exactly what you are asking, I think you are looking for an email digest like what yahoo groups provides. I have not seen that functionality here.
Yes, I've tried the RSS feed, but it does not work for me. It keeps failing.

Sometimes someone will bring up a point that has been clarified by a quote from the book, or by a developer. Sometimes I can search and find it again, but it is a lot easier if there was an actual subscription similar to what other forums have. I can check my profile for a particular thread. It is often a lot easier than searching for it, even though the searching for this website has improved greatly in the last 2 years.
I think the subscription similar to what PhP(?) forums have is what the OP was talking about.

In what way is it failing?I get an initial message, "Add this RSS Feed to Outlook?" with an option of Advanced, Yes, No. I've tried yes, then I tried Advanced, but I get, "Outlook cannot process the RSS content from http://Paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizo/websitefeedback/subscribingtothr eadsbyposting&xml=atom. The link may not point to a valid RSS source". It could just be something that I've not set up in outlook, but I'm not sure. I know too little of RSS.

Yes. This is exactly what I'm talking about.

If you're trying to keep a list of specific posts, try clicking the 'List' link on the post, and you can attach a list to your profile.

If you change the end of the URL from "xml=atom" to "xml=rss", does that make a difference for you?

No. No worries though. Maybe some day Paizo will work on improving this message board to be more efficient. For now, I'll just have to resort to the ineffectual method of refreshing the page since focus only seems to work within the sub directories.

The list thing is not too bad. I just tried it. I think the other poster wants the auto-subscribe that allows you to post to a thread once, and you are automatically notified from that point on. He may have to use the list combined with an RSS feed to get the results of a PhP forum's subscribe feature.

As an ecommerce operation that relies on our email servers not being profiled as "spammy" by large mail services, we're not terribly interested in anything that increases the number of emails flowing to customers from paizo.com, especially if those emails are triggered by other customers simply posting on messageboards.
