Given the snippets of conversation about letting the good guys do the work of finding the gate and the absence of Elan's father, I don't know that I would attribute Malak's actions as being for the benefit of Durkon. Malak sent Belkar to tell the OotS to get out and they didn't listen - his duty to Durkon (to the extent it existed) has been satisfied, and I doubt he will have any compunctions about slaughtering them...
...when the time is right.
Malak did what he did to further slight Nale, whom he HATES. His silence = Nale failing even worse than he already has.

Its a running gag about detection spells and lead sheeting that started with Belkar - hence the reason he is saying it. References can be found: here, here, and here.

Don't know on that one - maybe a question for him directly on GITP forums. I just remember it so vividly from the first time he did it in the strip. My guess is that Rich keeps a running gag "list" of certain D&D/RPG tropes that he pulls out. Just off the top of my head:
-Dwarven obsession with trees being evil - Dendrophobia (a Durkon trope)
-Flumphs constantly getting squashed by the characters.
-Varsuvius' gender
-Explosive Runes being cast as revenge- usually for comedic effect.
There's probably more.
I wonder if...
Also, I read back a bit... Tarquin alluded to having done something in the city in 882, and separated himself from his party (along with Kilkil) in 882. But we don't know where they've gone, save off to "business." That could lead down any number of avenues...

Then it would just be over sooner. As it is I prefer having the next one to look forward to. Too many of my favorite webcomics have either ended or been sold to new writers and I don't like the new direction. I'm good with whatever speed allows Rich to maintain his own interest.
There are an amazing number of running gags in the comic, but frankly that is a trend that I find myself liking less and less the more I run into it in comic after comic. Goblins for a while there had become a steady diet of riffs on running gags. I was pleased when it finally got back on track.

As it is, there are not Rich clones and it will be a long while before the story's done. So I will have to take it at the pace it is, and we both will go a long while before we have to worry about being sad that it's over.

Heh, no Lord Fyre, the "whole point" of the comic isn't to just repeat old gags, and I suspect Rich Burlew would be a bit put out to learn that some people view it that way. He obviously puts a lot of thought into an actual story that goes well beyond the running gags and I may be in the minority but I actually like the story more than the 500th riff on why rogues are sensitive about being accused of stealing. Just me though.
And of course I hope Rich brings this to some sort of closure, but it's not a huge deal either way. It's just a comic strip.
A good friend of mine is angry at Bill Watterson to this day for Bill's decision to put down his pen. I just was happy that we had Calvin and Hobbes as long as we did. I view such things as gifts from the artist and I try very hard not to put any expectations on gifts of any sort.

Gah. A comic strip (only a few panels each, except Sundays which were larger/longer, but still) almost every day for straight and your friend's upset that the artist stopped?
Just thinking about it, how many people can do something creative every day for ten years, without significant breaks (a few days at a time, maybe; probably less than a month total over an entire year)? No weekends off, unless you finish several strips early. No long vacations, unless you have already completed an entire run of strips. No room for writer's block, or being sick.
I have a ton of respect for anyone who can come up with new material on that sort of schedule.

When it comes to Rich's work; running gags; story; and the general nature of the strip, I recommend reading the many commentaries/detail notes in the printed books if you have a chance. He has really done a good job of explaining many of things that goes into OOTS.
But a summary based on that. I will admit some gags get tiresome, but given that is how the strip started and was the original goal, I am not opposed to the occasional reference or cross-gag to lighten the mood. And let's face it, lately it's been looking pretty grim and nasty.
But that aside, I think Rich has pretty much pointed out that the many fantasy/RPG/D&D tropes make it a great source of comedy and self-irreverence. Although the story has become more serious with time, I don't think Rich is afraid to remind us of "where he started."
As for the story ending - I understand that Rich has an ending in mind. He has hinted that he has that mapped out. Whether he is stretching it out or has a bigger master plan, I don't know. It does make you wonder, but I think people tend to forget that Rich was a game designer before. I can't help but wonder if Rich's stories are as much a chance to explore certain concepts about his game world as well as tell a story.

What I want is for Howard Tayler (Schlock Mercenary, has posted a strip every day for years) to be grabbed by a team of ninja genetic scientists. They capture him, extract his DNA and release him back into the wild. Then they grab all the good comic creators (other than Mr Tayler) and splice Mr Tayler's DNA with that of the other artists. They then release the other strip creators back into the wild.
Some may call it fantasy, but every modern improvement began with someone's dream.

I fell asleep at the break of dawn right in the middle of reading the final and most current strip 896.
I woke up and finished reading the strip.
And I Wished* I could read the next installment right away.
Lo and behold it appeared the very same second after I thought it.

Interesting though that Sabine is there, she's been identified as a succubus (demon) but she now lounging in hell.
That may bring back the old debate whether she is a demon (succubus) or devil (erinyes).

Sabine has been shown in the past that she works for the Fiendish Trio.
I don't think they're in any specific planar location, they're somewhere neutral to the three under-realms, as their own personal hangout. Due to being their lackey, Sabine might have had her planar origin re-bound to their lair rather than the Abyss. Or she might have just plane-hopped over there after getting shunted to wherever - she's prohibited from going back to the Prime after the holy word, but that doesn't stop her from hopping to other planes, I'd think.
