You can cast a single target spell with a range of touch - so why ever prepare/cast spells with the "personal" target word? In my experience, you can cast touch range spells on yourself, so preparing a spell with the "personal" word seems more limiting.
My assumption is that you can't use single target spells on yourself, but there isn't anything in the text that spells this out explicitly. This might be something to clarify.

Well, various class abilities rely on casting personal spells. The one that came to mind was the Destined sorcerer bloodline, they get bonuses when they cast spells with the personal descriptor. The other reason would possibly be Share Spells for familiars in very specific circumstances it might be preferred

I think their fear is that.. for some spells, you would only ever cast them on yourself and so getting it cheaper really isn't "cheaper".
I can see a wizard especially- since they can basically learn every single word, learning one "armor" spell for their own personal use and another for others just to get some other effect on his personal spell.
The same with various buff spells. "Oh, I'm casting this on myself like i do everyday, glad that makes it cheaper". Its a bonus for a false limitation- at least potentially.
