Word of Power and the Magus

Round 2: Words of Power Discussion

Liberty's Edge

The first thing I thought of when reading this is how it could apply really well to the Magus class, as the big complaint was lack of touch spells to use.

This could effectively give you a ton of damage touch spells to use, as well as a bunch of personal buff spells, all with as much specificity as you could want for flavor purposes.

I like it, but what do people think of the balance of of it with this class, as well as with the Eldrich Knight?

There is a lot of potential here. But we have to know what level certain spells are for a magus first before we can do anything. Keep in mind the release is for wizard/sorc who have 9 levels of spells. Magus will have a smaller selection of these spells to work with, limiting their flexibility to where they are balanced with the more versatile wizards and sorcs.

Still applies to Eldrich Knight, although not being able to cast through the weapon is an issue. You can use the conductive special ability from the APG, but that burns two spells, so I don't see that coming into play to often.

When I heard of this idea of crafting spells, giving healing spells to wizards was the first thing that came to mind. I imagine that to keep it balanced some words will not be able to be used by some classes, at least I hope so.

I haven't looked over the new rules yet, but I just hope you can't do a morale bonus to stats with these spells.

But even if the Magus list is limited, the Eldrich Knights won't be. This could create issues, depending on how powerful the buff spell/touch spells can get.

It is still early and people are still figuring out spells, but this is the area I can imagine the most abuse potential, as even if you have a limited Magus list, you won't have one for EK.

You have a point. Personally I think that this might make up for the utterly crappy capstone ability they have, but I see your point and it might still become an issue.

I am stuck at work, but maybe people who have access could post spells for fighter/caster builds to see what you can do with it.

I might give it a whirl with Eldritch Knight later tonight but I don't think I'm going to be impressed. With the low number of buffs and save free spells, I don't see how to make it work.

Just a thought on the Conductive weapon quality from APG that was mentioned. You could cast your 0 levels through it all day. Admitedly it would cause very little in the way of damage but it's something to think about.

The Conductive weapon quality only works for Spell-like and Supernatural abilities. Not normal spells.

Either way, that's what spell strike is for. Just Spellstrike 0-level spells all day.
