Viscious Weapon and DR

Rules Questions

Did a quick search, nothing definative could be found :(

So a quick question, does DR protect against Viscious weapon? I see no reason why it wouldnt and ive been thinking about picking up a viscious Greataxe for my barbarian but if DR does not mitgate it, then the damage he will be taking will be to much.

Thank you.

Hmm. Interesting. The flavor text for Vicious calls the damage "disruptive energy." DR does not normally protect against energy. However, flavor has no bearing on rules. DR says it protects against damage from "normal attacks." That's probably going to be the crux of debate. Is the damage from Vicious part of a "normal attack?" I'd be tempted to say yes but don't take that as gospel.

I am inclined to say no. As Yuengling says, it is 'disrubtive energy'.I wouldn't, however, regard this as simply flavor.

Unlike the other damage enhancing special abilities, it does not write anything about adding extra damage to the weapon.

Allowing DR on it would negate the drawback of the special ability to a degree it makes little sense that it is equivalent of flaming (and the rest) in price.

granted no official word but i kind of came to the same conclusion as Harald. Especially as it uses energy beyond the "first sentence is flavor" rule James has mentioned.

For one class. It would make it better for one class. Almost no one bothers with Adamantine. The RAW probably sides with no. I'm just saying I'm tempted to say yes because of the lack of clarity and the fact that it would be cool.

Liberty's Edge

Can I get a version of a flaming burst weapon that does twice as much damage in exchange for me taking half? If so I'd like a keen one of those in falcata form and a ring of fire resistance. Thank you.

(FAKE) EDIT: To the one using dispel magic on my ring, please stop. I need that to protect me against the backlash of the fire damage I do against yo-- OH! I get it now.

A Lesser Weapon Augment Crystal of Life Drinking; heal 3HP each time you deal damage to a living creature with the weapon it's attached to, up to 30HP/day (Magic Item Compendium) would offset most of the backlash damage. At least for a while, then there's the greater version...

ROTRL spoiler:
The barbarian on my ROTRL game got one of these way before the encounter with Grazuul, he still refuses to attach it to the Adamantine Vicious Military Fork he got from him for RP reasons BTW.

I can follow you there. But if I was the GM, I'd properly wait to make the decision until after he bought the enchantment, so it wouldn't be chosen for an optimizing purpose.

You mean the damage you take as opposed to the damage the opponent takes?

No, DR doesn't get involved since that damage to yourself doesn't come from an attack roll.
