One way I have seen it done is to draw it how ever you want and then upload it to a photo bucket account. You could just sketch it by hand and then scan it, or use paint and then upload it on photo bucket and give us the link, and password if necessary.
OK I'll try to get accessed to one.
You could also use deviant instead of photo bucket.
There are some folks starting to use GoogleApps spreadsheets for their maps, also.

Neither were they, but they seem to have figured it out pretty quickly (I'm referring to a couple of other DMs I'm playing with or watching).

Typically, I will create the map in microsoft excel and upload it to my google docs folder. Of course you could just create the document in google docs. Of course you would have to resize the cells but that is easy enough to do.
Here is a LINK to a map that I used early in my Council of Thieves game, just so you have an example to look at or work from.

It's all good. I see the map, it looks good to me. Is the square with the letters the table at which we are sitting and the letters representing our characters? Is the door to the room at the top of the map? Can the characters tell what the red area at lower left is? How about the black area at left? I'm guessing row 2 is sidewalk/boardwalk/street outside.

Sorry about this, but the posting rate in this game is just too infrequent for me to get into, so I'm going to pull out.
I'll keep an eye on the thread, so feel free to ask any questions you might have along the way about the google docs stuff or DMing a PbP in general.

Not to be mean, but at the current rate of posting, we've lost at least two of five players. I suspect there will be no one left that cares in a month.
Perhaps it would be best to just kill the game now and restart it when your schedule is more amenable.
