Just checking to see if there is anything preventing this for one of my playtest Magi.
Nothing prevents you from doing so but keep in mind whenever you cast a spell (Or use a weapon in that hand( you lose the AC bonus it grants until the beginning of you next turn, which kinda defeats the purpose.

unless you take the shield feat forget which that lets you keep AC when attacking with that hand

Yeah but that would require the Magus to take both the Shield Proficiency AND Shield Bash feats, 2 feats is pretty steep for a +1 AC shield bonus(Before enchantments).

Nope, and no real downside. Likely you'll be casting shield for a +4 shield bonus, but using a +1 mithril buckler for fortification is a wizarding tradition that if anyone the magi should respect.
Though its true if you attack with that hand you won't get the shield bonus from the buckler, you'll still get the fortification. The only downside (besides cost) is weight and a -1 to hit with an attack using that hand.

So, there seems to be two fairly optimized options:
1) Use the shield as a shield for special abilities, ie fortification
2) Use the shield as a weapon, for using wands, rods, etc.Correct?
Why not use both, I say?
Seriously, though, tell us how it goes. Oh, and if anyone compares your character to Goofy in Kingdom Hearts, give them a bashing they'll never forget.

If your going for Captain America ;)
1 Level Dip in Cleric
Magic Domain
Hand of the Acolyte (Su): You can cause your melee weapon to fly from your grasp and strike a foe before instantly returning. As a standard action, you can make a single attack using a melee weapon at a range of 30 feet. This attack is treated as a ranged attack with a thrown weapon, except that you add your Wisdom modifier to the attack roll instead of your Dexterity modifier (damage still relies on Strength). This ability cannot be used to perform a combat maneuver. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.

Better yet, 1 level in Generalist Wizard gives you the same ability but based off Int instead of Wis.
