"But where's [Spell X]?!?"

Round 1: Magus

Dark Archive

I understand that the spell list is intentionally narrow for the magus, but I still think that a few could be added without too many problems.

What spells does everyone think should make it onto the list and at what level?

I'll start with one:
Lead Blades from the APG is a perfect fit for the class, but I would bump it's spell level to 2 for the Magus.

It may already be planned for UM, but I want a touch attack spell that is tunable to match the energy DR weakness of an enemy. We have Shocking Grasp, but what about the other elements?

There's probably a good reason that it didn't make the Sor/Wiz list. That spell would be beeeeroken in the hands of a Magus or Fighter-Mage.

Enlarge Person + Lead Blades at level 1? Ouch.

Is not a PFRPG spell, it's a Pathfinder Campaign Setting spell. It's also ridiculously broken. [but that is not a topic for this forum].

I wouldn't be surprised to see it show up in UM. And Majuba, boo on you!

I realize that the class archetype for the Magus should wear armor, but I'd really like to see Mage Armor on their spell list. If nothing else, I'd think an arcane warrior would be able to use their magic to help fend off spectral creatures.

Meanwhile, I -dont- get why they have Floating Disk and Unseen Servant. Those seem very wizard-specific to me.

+1 I feel from a flavor POV the magus should either focus nearly entirely on utility/buff spells or straight damage dealing stuff. (That might be admittedly pretty short sighted, but it's a first impression.)

I think all combat and no utility makes the Magus a very dull boy. I like that they have some spells in there that aren't all about combat. I would actually like to see some more.

Spells that effect the physical world seem to fit with the Magus's practical nature. I like the wall spells and other battle field control spells. The non-mind effecting illusions are a great addition that can be used for tricky combat strategies and can be used out of combat as well.

For things that don't fit, I can see leaving Enchantments out, the Magus has a more direct method of dealing with people. Likewise summonings are not needed, a Magus does his own fighting.

So overall I am liking the direction.

Ant Haul - I just love this spell and almost every one gets it...why not Magus?

Instant Armor - I cannot stress this enough! This spell was practically MADE for them. and by the time you get high enough caster level to summon heavy armor, you have proficiency in it.

Instant Armor

Instant Armor...really...needs...to be...there...

also:
Tough of Fatigue
Vampiric Touch
Ghoul Touch
Chill Touch

+1 to the idea of giving them mage armor one the spell list.

It would also be pretty cool to see the class be able to have a better casting of it as a magus arcana, maybe add half int modifier then full int modifier at a higher level.

I’d like to see dimension door on the spell list.

Whoops, my mistake.

Liberty's Edge

I'm a little suprised Fox's Cunning isn't there. Seems weird that an Int based arcane caster wouldn't have it.

+1. I was extremely disappointed not seeing this one on the list.

This class needs to see more variety in its touch spells. If I counted correctly, the current draft has 4(!), all of which are level 2 or lower. And definitely, if I can't have Instant Armor, give me Mage Armor, though I wouldn't complain for getting both. ;-)

+1 on Vampiric Touch, Ghoul Touch, and Chill Touch

+1 on Fox's Cunning

I'd also like to see a couple more buff spells, like Heroism and Greater Heroism. The magus is taking a penalty to hit frequently due to Spell Combat, and doesn't seem to have that many ways to boost attack bonus. I wouldn't worry except that the Bard, Alchemist, and Inquistor can all easily boost their to-hit, and this class seems to be trying to be as martial as them.

Agreed. Honestly, I'd like to see the Magus with almost every self-buff out there, if thats his shtick.

Also, as I noticed in the Magus v. Summoner thread, he should get Haste as a 2nd level spell just like the Summoner. Throw this poor redheaded stepchild a few more bones.
