Female Human Rogue 2

"If they're moving a prisoner they'll be in a carriage," Estel retorts, "probably with a few men on horses and an escort of foot soldiers - they won't be moving fast. If we're mounted ourselves we can circle around them as we attack and stop them from going anywhere."

Male Human Bard Level 2

"So long as we approach them from both directions, so that the escort can neither pass us, nor escape back the way they came, then that will work." Surveying the group, "Do any of us know how many Hellknights usually accompany a prisoner transport?".

Ohh, Is that you Gorvio? Ranin blinks. I didn't recognize the hat! Fancy meeting you here! You find anything new about the C-O-T? Ranindolf ends with a whisper.

to the group:
Umm, If we have a whole day, and if they use a carriage, couldn't we dig some holes and stuff? That would stop a carriage, right?... I...I had a job digging not too long ago... Ranindolf trails off into thought.

Gorvio - you know that Hellknights in general, and the Order of the Rack in particular, are VERY arrogant, and are likely to view this as routine, perhaps even a training exercise for apprentice knights. Maybe 10 rookies and one experienced Hellknight to lead them.

Professor Rokannon muses.
"A full loadout of Sleep spells then? That means three of them, each potentially taking down four human targets; though my average is 2.5. Careful timing will be needed, as those who don't succumb are able to kick those who do awake if they keep their wits about them."
He muses further.
"I will also need to be within 120 feet. Some concealment at that range would be ideal."

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Janiven says, "How about if I lead the rest in some kind of mock ambush to distract them whilst you folks (i.e. the player characters) conduct the real attack? I think just about everyone is up to looking threatening, yelling and then running off, even if they are not fighters."

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

"If I could volunteer to lead the ambush distraction, It would be my honor to do so". "I cringe at the idea of attacking from ambush myself, and would be much more comfortable with a direct confrontation".

don't mean to be a pain...but he is a Paladin.

Male Human Bard Level 2

Looking over the group, "I think Janiven has a good idea. Assuming this place is well wooded, the main body of our force, (gesturing to the non-player characters) as well as Sir Winston, could hide in the woods and conduct a surprise attack from the front. In the confusion the rest of us (looking at the players) can attack from the rear after Professor Rokannon attempts to sleep the transport group. as we do that the frontal assualt should retreat into the woods, excpet for Sir Winston. That way Sir Winston can keep the force from advancing while the rest of the group attacks from the rear. Assuming the Hellkinghts act as they usually do, they will likely only have one full knight and several recruits as part of the escort, so we should be able to take them."

Ranin blinks at Gorvio's summary. That sounds like a good idea! He nods in agreement.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Janiven sketches a map of the road to the citadel, pointing out the small stone bridge that crosses the swift but relatively narrow stream called the Athua, which might make a good place for an ambush. She also indicates a few locations before and after the bridge where there's much more tree cover to allow a hit-and-run attack and to complicate pursuit via horseback.

(I'll go make a sketch map, only something has come up that needs dealing with...)

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Sorry about that... one school I'd applied to had sent a note asking if I could come round for a chat...

Here's the sketch map - Janiven apologies that cartography isn't one of her strong points!

Male Human Bard Level 2

Gorvio scans over the map that Janiven draws. After staring at it for a moment, he moves back from Janiven and leans against the wall. "Hmmm...give me a moment to think." Gorvio pulls out his flute and quitely plays "Lothlorien" to himself. After soothing himself and those around him, Gorvio reapproaches the discussion. " The bridge would be a great pinch point, however, if we were to be overpowered, the group not easily be able to return to cover. So even though I would normally agree with the bridge, I think we should strike at the place marked on this map as another possible site forested. It will allow those less able to strike quickly, but then return to safety. Also, the bridge appears to be closer to the Hellknights destination than I would like for an ambush."

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=106366 and select Lothlorien to hear what Gorvio plays to calm his thoughts and plan.

...Um, so where I go...? Over here by the trees? weren't we splitting up the force or something...? Ranin asks looking down at the map.

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Professor Rokannon peers at the sketch.
"Hmmm. So the bridge is a natural chokepoint, but the forested stretch would allow a closer approach and a faster hit and run."
He points out the features to Ranindolf.
Profession (Teacher): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Oops. Must be the map.

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

"Both sites have their advantages". "I hope not to skulk off into the forest if things go bad, and can't imagine that scenario, however the bridge does keep them from going around us".

"You know my feelings". "I am in favor of a frontal assault so that they may know that they will be held accountable, however I understand that doing so at this time would only result in the defeat or our cause". "Know that Sir Winston will stand in earnest for any plan developed...just please keep in mind that I refuse to strike from ambush".

Professor Rokannon gazes down at the map.
"Are we agreed then? Ambush them at a bend in the forest before they come to the bridge?"

Professor Rokannon is ready now.

Liberty's Edge

All right. Here's your ambush site. Each square is 5 foot. Tree-stumps are around 3 feet high, and any square containing one is considered 'difficult' terrain. The forest proper extends on either side, and although there's plenty of undergrowth for people to hide in, you can also move around, again 'difficult' terrain as far as movement is concerned.

The Hellknight party will approach from the bottom of the map.

It is now early evening. What is everyone doing?

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Professor Rokannon will select an appropriate hiding spot, well concealed towards the middle of the map on the left side.

Male Human Bard Level 2

As Gorvio places himself he reminds the non-players and Sir Winston, "Front runners need to make sure that they hide further up the road that us, because we (gesturing to himself, Prof. Rokannon, and Ranindorf) are the rear assault." Gorvio crouches behind one of the large rocks on the right side of the road approximately 10 to 15 feet from the road in the middle of the map. Gorvio is roughly across the road from Prof. Rokannon, with his bow drawn ready for combat. While he sits, Gorvio warms up his voice quietly to himself "Me, me, me, me, me...," preparing for his coming performance.

Liberty's Edge

You do realise that it's early evening and that the prisoner transport is not due to even leave Westcrown until tomorrow morning, don't you?

"Gorvio Marnok wrote:

Rear assult...Umm if this is happening in the morning...do you think we should umm set a trap or something? Regaurdless of what they reply to that is, Ranin takes up a hiding spot when the time is appropriete for the ambush, near the Prof, as he seems a bit less able in melee combat than Gorvio.

I assume that unless a trap or something is going to be set up, we all sleep until very early morning, so that we can properly set up the ambush.

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

Sir Winston will work his normal shift at the soup kitchen, then go back to his room and sleep early. He will then rise two hours before sunrise to pray and prepare.

"I think the party should leave before sunrise". "Few will be around to watch us leave, and we can arrive at the site a couple of hours before the escort". "There is a small produce check station just north of the City gates". "What say we meet there an hour before sunrise"?

When we arrive at the site, Sir Winston will take a post behind the large rock towards the North end of the site. When the Escort reaches a place about 60' from his place of concealment, he will step out to confront the group.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The next morning is chilly, with a mist drifting through the trees. At least it's not raining! Janiven says that she's arranged for a runner to observe the departure of the Hellknights and come on ahead, hopefully bringing some intelligence about numbers and armament before they reach your ambush site... although depending on how fast they are moving, there may not be that much advance warning, so it would be best to be set up ready...

I have done a larger picture of your ambush site with a grid, so you may tell me where you wish to be. Remember there are also the other 'revolutionaries' to position - they will accept your leadership. If you also make an initiative roll, state your first action and make any necessary die rolls, then once the Hellknights arrive - they come in at the bottom end of the map on the track - you may launch your attack with a surprise round. Make sure to tell me how far up the track you'll let them come before you start in on them!

Ambush site with grid

Ranin hides near the Prof, so wherever he places himself, Ranin is near there, hiding behind a tree or something, unless someone else tells him to go somewhere else, in which Ranin hastily does as told. Ranin holds his action until Gorvio does something.

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

To kill some time whilest things get going...

Ranin looks around for Gorvio, Sir Winston, and the others a bit worriedly.
Psst. Professor... Professssssooooor... We didn't...miss it did we? He whispers a bit worriedly.

Also, I'm hiding in the brush, behind a tree if possible.

(sigh) Yeah, that sounds about right...

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

Time passes on leaden feet. The sun seems to rise more slowly than usual. The mist continues to drift around the trees...

... and it is almost midday when the Hellknights come into view. First come a couple fully-armoured and riding warhorses, then a strange carriage, a big boxy thing drawn by two horses one in front of the other. Made of iron-reinforced wood, it's about 7' square and 5' high, clearing the ground by 2' and with a running-board around the sides and back. Two Hellknights stand on the running-board on each side. The driver is sitting on the roof at the front, with a Hellknight sitting behind him. In the middle of the roof, there's a heavy crossbow on a swivel mount, with another Hellknight manning it. Two more Hellknights mounted on warhorses bring up the rear.

They are just coming onto the map at the bottom - P70 or thereabouts

Initiatives and actions, please.

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Professor Rokannon takes careful aim and casts Sleep on top of the carriage, catching as many people as possible that include the driver.

Sleep-- Puts up to 4hd of creatures into magical sleep. Will Save DC16.

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

Sir Winston steps onto the edge of the roadway, his Glaive at his side, and holds up one hand.

"Halt, honorable knights". "You hold within the wagon one who has been falsely accused". "He must be released to my custody, or there will be trouble". "I give you this opportunity to hand him over and go peacefully on your way".

Fredrich is sure to keep himself only a quick step from the cover he stepped out from behind so that he can get back if they turn dis-honorable and fire on him with missile weapons.

Diplomacy (1d20+8=24)

Init 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Ranin waits for Gorvio to move in and then follows suit, his objective to get the man out of the carriage. If someone engages him in melee he starts out using non-lethal damage, and telling them to stand down. Once blood is drawn from him or the party, he abandons this and switches to normal lethal force.

Liberty's Edge

Sir Winston, your initiative please. And everyone else who hasn't posted yet, please do. I will resolve this opening round tomorrow (Wednesday) morning my time, those who have not posted will be deemed to be watching those who have!!!!

Male Human Paladin / Shelyn - 2

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Initiative

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

And the dance begins...

Ranindolf opens proceedings as Gorvio seems frozen in place, running forwards towards the carriage (you will reach it next round).

The Hellknights (Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 15) don't suspect anything yet, although the two riding behind have line of sight on Ranindolf, (Perception 1d20 ⇒ 16) and let out shouts of ALERT!

The Professor steps out, fingers moving in arcane patterns as he casts sleep targeting the folk on top of the carriage.

Driver: Will save 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 - Zzzzzz
Hellknight beside driver: Will save 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7 - Zzzzzz
Hellknight manning crossbow: Will save 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8 = Zzzzzz

Sir Winston steps out as well, making an impressive plea for a peaceful resolution... and the Hellknights spring to alert. The one manning the swivel-mounted heavy crossbow looks around (Perception 1d20 ⇒ 19) and swings it towards Ranindolf, while the two in the lead rein up their horses, one looking back as if seeking direction whilst the other draws his sword. The Hellknights on the running boards all jump down and draw their swords, mounting an all-round defence.

Next round please.

Last Round
...Gorvio... What are you doing...Should I... Dang it... Ranindolf takes off towards the carriage...

Round 2
Ok, let me just make sure I'm clear... 4 mounted hell knights, 2 in back 2 in front. 7 hell knights on the carriage, 2 on each running board now surrounding the carriage, the driver, the one sitting next to the driver and the crossbowman are all asleep. That's 11 hell knights, and 3 are asleep now. You posted above that the crossbowman pointed the mounted crossbow at me. Is that before he fell asleep or is their more hell knights I'm missing...

Rannindolf keeps moving towards the carriage, assuming he sees the crossbow, he keeps his shield up to help protect him. He is currently unarmed and keeps his hand visible to show that, but if he is fired upon or charged by the horses he then draws his warhammer. If it seems that Sir Winston is actually getting through to the hell knights and this can be resolved peacefully, Ranindolf slows down and assesses the situation as he comes up to the carriage and waits for something to happen. If he is attacked he tries his best to make it to the carriage and find a way inside.

Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 to find a way into the carriage to retrieve the prisoner, and to see how Winston fares.

Attack if needed to protect himself...
Melee: Warhammer 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 |Damage1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Attack is at -4 for non-leathal damage, if he is hurt, or if it is obvious to Ranin that someone else is, he stops going easy and you can add 4 to the above roll.
Wow...Lets hope I don't need to make an attack roll this round...

Male Human Universalist Wizard-- L1 | AC 12 (t12ff10) | hp 7/7 | Saves F+1 R+2 W+3 | Percep +1

Professor Rokannon will try to catch as many of the ones around the carriage as he can with the ten foot radius Sleep. If he can't catch more than two, he will switch targets to the two lead riders.

Sleep-- Puts up to 4hd of creatures into magical sleep. Will Save DC16.

Male Human Bard Level 2

Gorvio is snapped awake from the dozing he was doing when Sir Winston announces himself to the Hellknights. Gorvio watches the scene from behind the rock across the road from Professor Rokannon that he was hiding behind (I-27).

If the Hellknights do not surrender upon hearing Sir Winston's demand, then Gorvio begins to sing. (Performance 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13) "Come all ye young rebels enlist while I sing." Inspire Courage adds +1 to attack, damage, as well as saving throws against charm and fear for all allies that can hear Gorvio. Gorvio also draws his shortbow and notches an arrow.

If the Hellkinghts do actually listen to Sir Winston, then Gorvio does not sing, but simply draws his shortbow and aims it at whoever addresses Sir Winston, preparing to fire if any treachery occurs.

The melody of the song that Gorvio is singing can be heard at http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=106366 as the song Patriot Game.
I apologize for the earlier failure to post, I was backed up with trial work and briefs that had to be completed. I assume that I will be last in the initiative.

The bloke with the crossbow swung it round and then fell asleep before he could do anything with it!

Ranindolf reaches the carriage to see a large padlock on the door, and 2 Hellknights standing on guard between him and it.

"What do you want, peasant?" one demands rudely. Neither actually make a move towards you, but they look poised and ready to do so.

The two on horses bringing up the rear have turned round and are facing away from the wagon to guard against attack from behind.

The Professor switches his attention to the two riders at the front.

Front Rider #1: Will save 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9 - Zzzzzz
Front Rider #2: Will save 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (13) - 1 = 12 - Zzzzzz

Lucky they have high cantles on their saddles or they might have fallen off and woken up :)

So nobody is responding to Sir Winston as they were the ones approaching him and paying attention.

Want to sing, Gorvio? And you may make an initiative roll now, you just got taken by surprise as well!

Surprised that he was questioned, Ranindolf, answers...

We're here for the prisoner... Umm... Quickly thinking, Ranindolf comes up with a brilliant bluff!

...We-we're thr-no... forty men- surrounded with bowcrosses... give us the prisoner and we can let us go free... He quickly says ...Too bad Ranin is a horrible liar... XP

Convinced that his bluff was executed well enough, he hopes that the guards will fall for it. I beleive this is an attempt to deceive someone, so this will take be Ranin's round. Sense no one has attacked yet he is only armed with his shield.
