Almar nods to Garavel. He gathers you together at one side of the tent.
"The destroyed wagon belonged to the Lady Almah's personal fortuneteller Eloais, who hailed from her distant homeland of Varisia. His specialty was a divinatory deck of cards known as Harrow, which I understand at least one of you have seen before. Naturally, as I wasn't there either, I don't know the answers to your questions, Hale, but they are good ones and I suggest you inquire amongst the people that were here. It also might be worth looking at the wagon itself, see if there are any clues there. I'll leave you to get on with it, report back to me what if anything you discover."
He rises, goes over to Almar, and the two depart into the depths of the tent deep in conversation.

Well, I guess I will be moving around to discuss with people and see if they remember anything odd from last night. I am interested also to hear opinion of father Zastoran about this matter Amar speaks with low voice and moves towards then outer rings. Amar walks as he tells or rather share his feelings to his familiar Azb Azh, fire, bad thing, track, suspicious
Conversation finishing, the scorpion climbs down and speed away to night, while sending feelings of things, which Azh believe to be useful to his master: Meantime, Amar is focusing to surroundings and try to see, if there is magic in working, while slowly walking towards the tent of Zastoran

Khismia is saddened by the tragedy that befell Eloais and so far from his homeland. Khismia asks Almar how she could help with the service for him. If there is a corpse left Khismia will investigate the body to see how he died, was he dead before the fire or did he die in the fire.

Once she is done with that she will join the others to try and find out how this happened, mainly by talking to the people in the camp and asking about the events before the fire and anything odd that they might have seen. She keeps a gentle tone and helping people remember details.

Khismia, Romo and Hale: Physical examination of the ruined wagon reveals sooty ashes, a few broken bottles or potion vials, a cracked crystal ball, and several pools of melted wax where candles must once have stood. Eloais's charred skeletal form remains near the center of the wagon. There do not appear to be any overt signs of struggle or violence, suggesting that the fortune-teller was killed by the fire itself or from inhaling the smoke the fire caused.
Romo
Amar: You make your way to see Father Zastoran. He has returned to his tent after the meeting, and is tending to Trevvis and Kallien, who are resting on pallets under an awning. When he sees you coming, he leaves off and walks over to you.
"Greetings, friend, and the blessing of Nethys be upon you. Is there something that I can help you with?
There is divine magic in operation here...
Romo Vendelev
Romo takes Hale to the side, out of earshot from Dashki and the others, "We are being watched. That Dashki fellow, the supposed gnoll expert, he's just around the corner of there", Romo subtly motions with his right hand in the direction of Dashki. "Maybe we should have a word with him. I'll cover the back, you approach him from the front."
Romo walks a long circle around the camp then sneaks up to Dashki from the back, he doesn't approach Dashki's wagon until Hale confronts him.

Oops, I'm a few hours behind you guys. Gander would have gone with Hale and Romo to investigate the wagon. Mind if we assume that he was there with you both when Romo realized that Dashki was spying on you?
Gander nods agreement and moves away, aiming to approach Dashki from the side.

After a couple of minutes of examining the remains of the wagon, looking for the likely center of the explosion Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16; then determining that enough time has passed for Romo and Gander to be in position she makes her way towards Dashki in resolute steps. Her demeanor clearly portrays that of royalty that expects nothing but obedience from all beneath their station.

When Khismia finds the skeleton she kneels next to it and prays to Sarenrae, asking her to light his path so he will not fall to darkness in spite of the circumstances of his death.
After she investigated the skeleton and could not tell much by just those remains she looks at the rest of the wagon. She wonders why he did not try to escape the wagon. It does not seem as if he was asleep and he was in the middle of the wagon, thus not trying to exit. So either he was helpless for some reason or it happened too fast.
She looks for anything inside that could have started the fire, an accident with alchemical supplies or such. She does not know much about alchemical supplies thus anything that looks like such supplies she will assume is flammable.

Gander and Romo: The pair of you sneak around and come up behind Dashki from two directions, it was as if you'd been practising the move for years :) He does not seem to be aware of you.
Hale: You march over to Dashiki - who jumps at your bellow.
"Who... me? I had nothing to do with it! What do you want to know anyway?" he manages to get out, looking really flustered.
I hesitate to mention this, but Dashiki's personal hygiene is, well, not good - he has a powerful body odour, his hair is greasy and his clothes have not seen much attention either!
Khismia: You stay behind in the remains of the burned-out wagon, praying over the body. The only thing you notice is that there are a large number of half-burned candle stumps, many melted into strange shapes, littered around the wagon.
Hale Caress
Hale regards the pathetic creature with disdain - her body language signaling clearly that Dashiki is merely tolerated; for now. She gives Dashiki a few moments to fully comprehend the severity of the situation, her presence looming over him and all escape routes fully denied by Romo and Gander. I'll assume that they effectively aid her intimidation attempt
"Your actions mark you as a suspicious man, gnoll expert. The explosion in that wagon was no mere accident, so much is apparent, why are you spying on us? What are you doing here?" Intimidate, taking 10 and aid from Romo and Gander 10 + 7 + 2 = 19

Dashiki is looking extremely nervous.
"I... I was nowhere near. I was finishing up my dinner beside the campfire when the blaze started. I... No! I had nothing to do with the fire! How do we even know the fire was set? That idiot burned a hundred candles in his wagon. Perhaps he just got unlucky. We're in gnoll country. It was probably pugwampis."
Nice teamwork on the intimidation, folks!
Hale Caress
Hale will keep up the same formula, hoping to pressure the guy into giving up what he knows
"Pugwampis? Do you know who you are talking to?! That wasn't a fire, that was an explosion. You have something I should know. If you're too scared to talk about it, I'll give you something to be terrified about." Hale's pupils dilate, the way her lips curl give a decidedly canine slant to her teeth, her body tautens as her muscles become apparent and her pulse visible shivers her skin. A powerful fighting spirit emanates from Hale that can sap the marrow out of even seasoned veterans. Using 1 round of rage for effect, and maybe a circumstance bonus

Romo: Wrack your brain as you may, you cannot recall ever having eaven a passing reference to a 'pugwampi'...
Hale, Gander and Romo: Dashiki is literally quaking in his boots.
"The fire was absolutely nothing to do with me! All I care about is..."
He's just about in tears.
Whispering, "...Almar. She's so... so, wonderful."
Straightens up. "But I had nothing to do with the fire, I was finishing my dinner over by the campfire, just as I told you. It was the pugwampis, no doubting it."

Could you help me with some questions I have? Maybe you can answer couple of them: Any idea what might have caused this or someone? Is there anything which might be related to this accident? How is the relationships between people and general attitude about this caravan travel and attempt to restore the old ruins? Amar asks Zastoran.
Azh is meantime moving through the camp and moving through shadows to find something
Megan Robertson
|
Gander, Romo and Hale: Dashki seems to straighten up a bit.
"You question my knowledge? Haven't I suffered enough in gaining my knowledge of gnolls to deserve a bit of respect? Pugwampis follow gnolls, bringing bad luck - everyone knows that!"
However, Gander, you've never heard a thing about anything called a pugwampi, you're certain of it!
Amar: You put your questions to Zastoran. The halfling gestures you to a stool in the shade of an awning, taking another and lighting his pipe.
"Now, let me see, my son. I've no idea about how the fire started. I was reading a book over there, by the firepit, but the mercenaries, dear chaps, were getting a bit rowdy and so I'd just got up to come back here to my tent... all of the mercenaries were there. Now, Eloais was a charlatan but a nice fellow for all that. Not a one of these others here can discuss the poetry of Bellianais or the music of far-off Absalom. Eloais was well traveled and intelligent. I will miss him. Still, the Lady Amar's better off without his influence, I would think. I've been with her since she first started out, physician and spiritual advisor both. She only hired Eloais about a month ago, something about how it 'felt right' to have a Harrower at her side, although she's never visited the lands of her ancestors where such superstition is more usual. It made her happy, that was a good thing, even if on unsubstantial grounds."
Gander Longstalks
Gander stopped and studied the man for a moment.
"So you're saying it was these pugwampis that started the fire because they bring bad luck? That's the only reason you have for your suspicions? No tracks, no evidence?"
Angrily he spat in the dirt and turned to the others. "This superstitious fool doesn't seem to know anything!"
Hale Caress
Hale subsides her anger; she seems vastly more approachable now. Nodding to Romo and Gander she says: "Thanks, your help is appreciated - have a look about the camp, maybe something else turns up." A certain inflection in her voice hints that she's not merely suggesting it, but expects them to leave.
Hale waits for Romo and Gander to depart before acknowledging Dashiki again. She seems almost like a different person entirely, far kinder - if still regal - her voice is soft, to make sure nobody but Dashiki can hear. "Almar... ey? She is wonderful, isn't she? How did you get to know her?"
Gander Longstalks
Gander's lips twisted in a grimace as he considered whether to do as Hale requested. He knew that if he started following her orders he'd only encourage her to continue using her imagined position against him. On the other hand, there was something in her eyes that made him a little queasy so he decide to go along nonetheless.
He looked back a moment later and what he saw made him grateful he'd left. Time enough to show her he wasn't hers to command later...when he was less likely to be ill.
He glanced over at Romo. "Any ideas? I suspect at this point it'd be impossible to find any tracks at the burned wagon. Perhaps on the outskirts of camp?"

Romon, Gander and Hale: Dashki seems relieved at the change of subject.
"Pugwampi", he says. "Of course I know about them. Terrible critters what crawled up from the Darklands below the earth. 'Jackal rats,' some folks call 'em, on account of their pointed little heads. They worship gnolls as gods and infest their communities like rats. Wherever pugwampis go, bad luck is sure to follow. The gnolls hate pugwampis because of it, and try to kill them all the time. But they always come back. Perhaps their bad luck caused the fortune-man's candles to start a fire? Yes, pugwampis. I am certain it was pugwampis."
Khismia: Trevvis and Kallien are resting under an awning beside the cleric's tent, and seem glad of the company.
"We were round the fire-pit, enjoying a bit of a laugh after dinner, when someone - can't remember who - noticed the flames coming from Eloais's wagon. Then it was pandemonium. Kallien and I ran over 'cos we were sure he was inside, he'd eaten his meal quickly and gone back saying he wanted to do a Harrowing before he turned in, dumb weakling was always fiddling with those cards... look where it got him! Kal' nearly got trapped by falling burning debris, and I got burned trying to haul her out. Not as if he were worth it, guess there's only one reason the Lady Almar kept him around and that's not card-play, know what I mean?" Trevvis winks at you.
Hale: After you've chased Gander and Romo away, you try to get Dashki to confide in you.
"Here's my story, for what it's worth. Almah hired me about a month ago to tell her all about the gnolls living in these hills. Gnolls killed my mother and grandfather when I was a boy. They put fire to our village and slew hundreds. Somehow I escaped with my father to the town of Solku, not far from here. It was a long time ago, I’ve forgotten most of what I saw. Terrible things. But I find it’s the sounds that stay with me. The shrill howls and barks — hundreds of them at once — that sounded deliriously close to an audience. Laughing at us.
"Father raised me to know everything about the gnolls, their customs, their language. So as better to track them down and wipe them out. All of them. Together we scouted out their lairs, studied their tribes, listened to them speak until we could understand what they were saying. They’re not dumb animals, you know. Not like you might think. In some ways they’re even smarter than us.
"Dad didn’t survive our first raid on a gnoll camp of the Three Jaws tribe. I saw them fall on him like hyenas on an abandoned kill, slathering themselves in his blood and innards. I can still hear the tear of his scalp and the sound of his bones against frenzied teeth. Against this scene I was forgotten. Ignored.
"I escaped, and I carry on the work of my father. As for Almar..." - his voice softens - "Well, to work for such a beauty is a bonus, a dream... perhaps the fates choose to bestow her on me as compensation for all that has gone before."
Romo Vendelev
Romo replies to Gander, "It pains me to say this, but I don't know anything about Pugwampis. I know this land very well, but I have never seen or heard of such a creature. "
He shrugs then starts walking away from the camp.
"Come on, help me look for tracks. I'm getting sick of standing around these jesters."
Romo leads Gander about twenty feet away, then crouches down and walks slowly while inspecting the ground. "Keep your eyes open"
He circles the camp while looking for tracks.
If it's possible to take 20 I will, otherwise I will take 10. My modifier is +6 (Survival) so that's 26 or 16. That ok?

I understand. Basically she was just here as a fortune-teller for Almar and tried to read signs. I find it odd for someone like her to be here... but that´s in past already. Can you tell anything about people you would suspect to be behind this or...? I am also quite interested what do you hope to achieve here, not just as a advisor for Almar.
Meanwhile Azh is moving and notices Romo and Gander outside of camp and sends mixture of feelings to Amar desert wind with a feeling of dryness, accompanied moment later by blazing fire with howling wind, surrounding with... an odd feeling of brown, yellow, red and black
Amar is somehow confused now by this colourful... emotions from Azh and ponders for a while what happened. However, he will stay for a while with Zastoran and listens his answer while responds to Azh blue... calmness... sharp... patience

Those hunting for tracks: Yes, taking 20 is acceptable as you can take as long as you want looking!
The tracks in the immediate vicinity of the burned-out wagon are quite confused, the result you imagine of everyone scampering around firefighting. Casting out further from the wagon away from the encampment is disappointing - there do not appear to be any tracks leading towards or away from it at all. Just you lot arriving, and that was from a different direction...
@Amar: I know charred skeletons are difficult to analyse but, er, Eloais was a male!
Hale: Dashki looks a bit indignant.
"A lover! Of course not, she's keeping herself..."
In the distance, Almar comes out of her big tent and looks around, seeing where you all are. She is accompanied got four well-mannered, meticulously attired soldiers who are giving her a close escort. They are a marked difference to the rest of the hired guards, who are quite scruffy and more laid-back in approach.
Dashki scuttles off at this point, as Almar strides across the encampment towards you.
"What have you discovered so far?" she enquires.
Khismia, Rose-golden Kismet
Khismia blushes at the suggestion and commend Trevvis and Kallien on their bravery. She explains that Lady Almar wants her and the others to figure out how the fire started and if they had any ideas how this could have happened. She is taking care not to bias them to thinking it was or was not an accident. She also asks who else they would recommend she should talk to, someone that was outside and not in a wagon during dinner, that perhaps could have seen more. Lastly she asks is there is anything else she could do for them.
Hale Caress
I assume Hale would know how to address Almar, but I'm not sure. I'll use "Lady" for now, but feel welcome to correct me :)
Hale nods at Almar's approach - and motions that she'll wait a moment for Romo and Gander to return too before beginning to speak. "Lady Almar, we have not determined much yet. These two are experienced trackers in the wilds and neither has found any traces of outside influence; this suggests that if the explosion was not an accident that the perpetrator is still in the camp."
"Of course, this presupposes that it was not an accident. This is not clear cut yet. Any ordinary fire would not be likely to catch Elaois unawares. It would require outside interference, or some supernatural accident, to cause it. Though I'm not knowledgeable in the magics, so I cannot comment reliably on it, you would know better if Elaois dabbled dangerously in the unknown."
"On the other hand, if it was an engineered explosion; then the perpetrator did his job well indeed. We haven't spoken with most people yet - but for now it seems nobody is unaccounted for just before the incident. The gnoll expert" - Hale's mouth curls slightly in dislike - "Dashiki, he appeared suspicious as he was spying on our investigation. We've not managed to get anything out of him - he blames pugwampis, some mean-spirited jackal-rats associated with gnolls apparently. I guess that means that Dashiki, at least, does not consider the fire to be an accident. He seems to revere you, my Lady. If he is involved, I'd suspect jealousy as a motive."
Megan Robertson

@Hale: 'Lady' will do nicely, thank you.
Hale, Gander & Romo: Almar listens to what you have to say.
"I'm not convinced that the fire was arson at all, but asked for an investigation to find out if we did have a problem. It's all very upsetting... Eloais and I did not have a romantic association, but we had been spending quite a lot of time together. His readings had grown increasingly grim, and that his last reading centered on an auspicious card, the Cyclone, portending death by fire and schemes by powerful evil. When I asked if that indicated something about Kelmarane, he said that it did, but that the village is only a small part of something much larger, something he called the Legacy of Fire.
"As for Dashiki and these pugwampis... I've not heard of them either, not that wildlife is one of my interests. Anyway, if he knows so much about them, he'd better produce one. But I don't want him going off on his own if there is the slightest hint of suspicion about his behaviour, your group had better accompany him."
Khismia: Trevvis apologises for embarassing you, and adds that Dashki had not been at the firepit with the rest of them.
"I don't know for sure, but he was probably spying on the Lady... he did that quite a lot, sneaking around and watching her."
Hale Caress
"Certainly Lady Almar."
Hale asks Romo to find Khismia and Amar; they should probably join the effort.
Hale, accompanied by Gander, searches for Dashiki - finding him slinking in the shadows not too far off. She beckons him closer and outlines Lady Almar's request: "Dashiki. Lady Almar puts some weight on your testimony that pugwampis could be responsible. She's asked us to accompany you to find and capture one of these creatures. Do you think we could do that?"
Romo Vendelev
"Walking in this sun will be tiring. It will be a long day tomorrow. I think I am going to to retire for the night, while the air is still cool."
Romo casually walks over to his packed bags next to Slab. He takes out some water and feed for the donkey and leaves it in a bowl for him. He then finds some even ground and starts to assemble his tent.
