Using scrolls for spells not on your class list?

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

One of our players is running a converted Warmage class in our Pathfinder campaign He feels that as an arcane caster, he should be able to cast any arcane spell from a scroll or wand. Is this correct? I was under the impression that unless the PC has UMD, the only way to cast from a scroll is to have the spell on he classes' list.

Thanks,
Max

From the PRD:

Quote:

To have any chance of activating a scroll spell, the scroll user must meet the following requirements.

* The spell must be of the correct type (arcane or divine). Arcane spellcasters (wizards, sorcerers, and bards) can only use scrolls containing arcane spells, and divine spellcasters (clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers) can only use scrolls containing divine spells. (The type of scroll a character creates is also determined by his class.)
* The user must have the spell on her class list.
* The user must have the requisite ability score.

So, if the spell is not on his list, he needs UMD to be able to fake that.

In fact, it is stated thus in the UMD skill:

Quote:
Use a Scroll: Normally, to cast a spell from a scroll, you must have the scroll's spell on your class spell list. Use Magic Device allows you to use a scroll as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list.

You are correct. The spell must be on his spell list to be able to cast it from a scroll/wand/staff. If he wants to get around the limitations of the warmage then he should take UMD and the skill focus feat. Which I would add was not a viable option in 3.5.

The Exchange

You are correct.

Otherwise, you must use UMD to activate a scroll.

As others have said you are correct here.

That said UMD is a very good skill for a warmage to invest at least one rank in, so as to be able to use wands/scrolls out of combat for utilities. As a CHA based class a single rank is often sufficient for this.
