Alternate Animal Companion

Advice

The PHB states just before the list of possible animal companions that

Quote:

The animal companions listed here are by no means

the only ones available—additional animal companion
types can be found in the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary. Some
of the special attacks and qualities possessed by animals
are covered in more detail there as well.

In our campaign there is a druid 6th that choose to take the Tiger (CR4 I think) straight out of the Bestiary and then applied the advancement track...

Needless to say that was quite powerful for level 6 (although I guess it would be only marginally stronger that an advanced level 7 great cat).

I now told her that she could take the Tiger but would not be allowed to advance him.

How have you handled that?

He did it incorrect.

The tiger use the one from the core rule. The Bestiary however does have a few new ones in the druid write up. All animal companions use the druid format from the core rule. If it does not have that format you may not use it.

yes, by "The animal companions listed here are by no means

The player should be using the large cat from the druid section, not the tiger from the bestiary

Allowed from the Bestiary

Ankylosaurus 83

Just to make it clear all Animal companions use the rules from page 51 of the core book, every single one

Your players tiger would use those rules as well. Animal companions doe not use monster stats.

Thanks for the list. I don't have the Bestiary here with me, so excuse the question: how did you get this list. Is it an entry under the Monster ("may be used as an animal companion by a druid of level x or higher")?

Each creature that can be used as an Animal Companion has a special section on its page with its statistics as an Animal Companion and the advancement track. It uses the same format as the Animal Companions in the Core Rulebook.

The Axe Beak from the Bonus Bestiary is a good example. The Axe Beak is Large, but the Animal Companion version is Medium, advancing to Large at 4th Level.

Also in the Bonus Bestiary is the only example (that I am aware of) of an Animal Companion that requires a minimum Druid Level. The Dragonne requires an effective Druid Level of 10 *and* has a penalty to Druid Level for advancement purposes.
