I would REALLY like my Cavalier to have a griffon as his mount... (who wouldn't?) I also do not care if it took him a while to acquire it, as long as he gets it eventually.
I see no reference to gaining an alternative mount/companion in the description of the druid's animal companion, however.
Ideas? Comments? Or did I just miss something?

Roc Companions
Starting Statistics: Size Medium; AC +5 natural armor; Speed 20 ft., fly 80 ft.; Attack 2 talons (1d4), bite (1d6); Ability Scores Str 12, Dex 19, Con 9, Int 2, Wis 13, Cha 11; Special Qualities low-light vision.
7th-Level Advancement: Size Large; AC +3 natural armor; Attack 2 talons (1d6 plus grab), bite (1d8); Ability Scores Str +8, Dex –2, Con +4.
Rocs taken as animal companions by druids or rangers are typically newly hatched birds—a baby roc is the size of a person and ready for flight and hunting within minutes of hatching. Unfortunately for druids seeking animal companions of legendary size, an animal companion roc is limited to Large size—still large enough for a Medium druid or ranger to use the flying beast as a mount.
All you're missing is rake and pounce.. You gotta pay the price for flying and large size.

It's pretty clear under the Monster Cohorts section that while you can get a Griffon as a mount, it's through the leadership skill, because they're not animals. Same applies to other exotic mounts such as dragons.

As per the leadership rules, you could get a loyal griffon to use as a mount with a leadership score of 12.

Yar!
follow this link to a post I made a while ago detailing what mounts are available for which characters at what levels.
Griffon is in there, but it's not automatic (aka: leadership feat, cohort Lv 8, meaning you must be Lv 10).

One oddball way to get a griffon as a companion is to use the Companion Figurine feat from Seekers of Secrets. It allows you to use a Figurine of Wondrous Power (like the Bronze Griffon) as you animal companion.
EDIT: Oops, it looks like the Bronze Griffon is not one of the options. How about an Ebony Fly? ;-)
