the eidolon is more than just breakable. it's extremely easily breakable. it can be built around being stronger than any mere cookie cutter great wyrm dragon. and as strong if not stronger than most gods.

Ok maybe I missed something, or maybe its a bit of exaggeration, but exactly how can they be made that strong?

It can't. Great Wyrm dragons have the auto-win button called "I'm a giant monster that can eat your face without relying on magic and I can cast antimagic field". Eidolons aren't even remotely in the same power level. Strong, yes, but not even in the same league as ancient dragons, let alone deities.

The 'strongest' eidolons that you'll likely see seem far more scary on paper than in practice. They load themselves up as glass canons with insane damage, but can't take any pre-emptive strike that anyone seeing a large/huge critter with 10+ arms holding weapons will draw.

Strong is the wrong word. The only thing that puts them in the sphere of deities is perceived invulnerability. Demons and archons are no different. Kill them a thousand times, they just keep coming back. Eidolons are just another in a long line of companion critters. They can be made pretty nasty, but they still go poof when someone casts dismissal...

Liberty's Edge

I think the point being that you cant actually KILL them. At best they go away for 8-24 hours depending on if the character gets a chance to rest.

Shadow Lodge

I disagree Themectricsystem, but only for an obvious reason that every class with a companion of any sort has.

Kill the Character, and the companion goes from Awesome . Wait, this was the thing just killing us? Ha!

A bit of an exaggeration? More like making a mountain out of a molehill. As a god, I can just will my enemies dead. Nascent divine figures like archangels or full-fledged demigods might be a bit more of a nuisance, but not an eidolon.

As for the remark about dragons - my children have far more going for them then brute strength. Those "cookie cutters" will have about twice as many HD (with the appropriate increase in attack bonuses and saves), powerful supernatural powers and considerable magical ability. Even the most feeble of great wyrms are virtually archmages in their own right - and very few archmages have the experience of over a millenium of living (at the very least) as well as a gargantuan body.

It seems like the eidolon have good offense, but the defense is quite poor. Without the ability to wear armor, and slow progression on AC evolutions, it seems like Paizo made the eidolon able to die easily, so then the summoner would actually have to use the SLA. Not to mention the eidolon doesn't heal easily.

Eidolons play rocket tag all the time it seem.
