I got to look at a friends PDF copy of the APG today. Can I assume the new rules in the rules chapter are all optional? There are some I don't care to put into my game.

If you are the DM, Rule zero.

All RPG rules are optional, including this one.

All of the rules are optional. Use the ones you want, and not the ones you don't want. That goes for anything in the Core Rulebook as well.

But, if that one is optional, it could mean that it doesn't apply, in which case, no rules are optional, including that one. Which means...

To understand recursion, you must first understand recursion - the Tarrasque

Yo dawg, I heard you liked recursion, so I put a liking of recursion into your liking so that recursion was to you liking, and I heard about it.

But in seriousness, to the OP: you can choose to use or disallow any rules you wish to, in any game system.

This may make for an increasingly arbitrary game, but sometimes losing or adding a rule or two just makes the game 'flow' more easily.

FYI the New Rules are simply four new combat maneuvers.

Could this be a new means of felling the dread Tarrasque?

Probably just cause him to eat you faster so you quit causing these sorts of problems for him.
