New to Pathfinder...

Rules Questions

i was just wondering if anyone can give me some tips on playing/ GMing pathfinders... my group and i are big into 3.5 i bought the core book out of curiosity but i am finding myself a bit overwhelmed...... between the clerics not wearing heavy armor to sorcerers bloodlines ( i like it) to new skills... and there the games new xp and item ways... i just need a little nudge advice or what ever anyone can help with thanks

Welcome!

I am still finding things that have changed a bit from 3.5 to Pathfinder. My recommendation is to hang out on these forums to pick up on some things, read the class chapters, race chapters and the Combat chapter to start with.

Once you've done that it might be helpful to write up and run a small combat encounter between a party of four against some critters. While preparing that make sure to read the applicable rules section even if you think you know how things work just so you catch on to any of the smaller changes. Then run the combat, again checking the rulebook even for things you are pretty sure you know how they work. This will help you find things that might have changed.

Also remind players that as they choose feats and spells to make sure to read the description and not assume they are exactly the same as they worked in 3.5.

It takes just a bit to discover the differences, but it is well worth it!

so in all realitiy is it really worth it to convert to pathfinder or is it better to use path finder as a sub world and or extra book?

As a player, it's worth it.

As a DM, I can't imagine going back to 3.5. It's sooooooo much easier to DM for Pathfinder than 3.5. Paizo streamlined all kinds of things that are either transparent or just no big deal from the player side of the DM screen, like experience awards and retroactive skill ranks from increased Intelligence.

I agree with this TOTALLY! And after working along side my players to help with creation, I discovered a lot of little things that I missed while reading through the PF corebook. Its like getting reaquainted with an old friend.

I would convert if it were me. Our group has been playing 3.5 for several years and we are getting set to start Kingmaker with the Pathfinder ruleset. We are looking forward to it.

ok well i guess im still getting used to the different class skills like for example: clerics no longer in plate and no longer turning? tho i do like the burst idea its like like the raidint light class in the complete divine :)

i like the rules changing but the whole not unlimited cantrips in kinda odd but i did see they removed cure minor lol

what do you guys do for prestige classes? i really don't want to have to go buy a whole new set of books? will say the old assiain or thurmatage work?

Actually the core rule book has a few PrCs in it already. In Pathfinder it really is worth sticking with a base class for all levels, with all the class features and the favored class bonus.

Most of the 3.5 DMG PrCs have been updated with the Dwarven Defender being changed/updated in the new APG.

Also, I have recently started a new Pathfinder game and it is so far going really well. There have been some situations where the players are doing way better than they ever would in 3.5 and the NPCs are not just getting completely chumped and are actually challenging to the players.

Free cantrips just mean your wizard isn't a crossbowman as well any more, he can just throw cantrips instead. It also means your casters can detect magic pretty much at will, which is kind of right to my mind.

The cleric can be a healer without having to blow all his spells on it, and he isn't automatically so good in combat. He can be, just blow one of those extra feats on it, but it's no longer automatic. Druid wildshape took a BIG hit from the nerfbat, they are no longer so uber-powerful.

You will find that fighters can now deal out more damage per round than any other combat class, unless they are using their 'speciality' (rage, smite or favoured enemy).

hmmm well i have alot more reading to do before i talk to my group about it....

so any tips my fellow GMs can give me about conversion, things to read up on, possible house rules to avoid or try? I would say message it to me but i don't know if you can do that yet on this forum... or just post it here thanks alot :)

A good nudge is to go Here and download the 3.5 to pathfinder conversion guide.. it outlines a lot of the changes to the game in an easy to read format for everyone. Once that is done, feel free to ask questions here... if its a particularly good question, you might even get it nominated using the new frequently asked questions (FAQ) functionality to go on the web page's soon to exist FAQ page.

The community as a whole is very welcoming, but like all forums, don't let a snarky answer by one poster for something turn you off. I will say that there are some of us who tend to throw some threads on their heads at times and go on a 5-10 post tangent - don't take this personally, and join in the fun.

Lilith will be here soon with some legendary cookies for you, I'm sure.

Look up the conversions threads, there are all sorts there, and ElginLightbringer did a load of the 3.5 non-core classes.

If you post the question up here, somebody is bound to have a link for the answer!

Conversion advice: Don't. I just run everything with almost no change from 3.5, calculate CMB/CMD on the fly, and it works fine. Treat these types of creatures as -1 or -2 CR.
