Consequences of a dead familiar?

Rules Questions

So what are the consequences of a dead familiar for a wizard?

Erectile dysfunction, low appetite, and sleeping too much. You may also experience dry mouth, constipation, and trouble concentrating. If symptoms persist for longer than two weeks, consult your cleric. Void where prohibited, and do not operate heavy machinery.

You lose any of the benefits of that familiar and you have to cast all touch spells yourself. You also have to follow the rules to try and get a new one. (But more to your point it is not like in earlier editions when the Magic-User lost permanent hit point and risked dieing... thank god.)

LOL.. really... I remember killing a party illusionist by axing their familiar. Was very hardcore, waaay "back in the day".

While we're on the topic, what are the consequences to a familiar when its master dies? In our group, everyone but the DM assumed they became normal animals again. DM said the familiar dies or goes insane.

Or far more rarely inherits his/her master's powers.

That is how a homunculus works when the master dies but there is no precedent for a familiar.

Lunch!

A lot less than the consequences for the same thing happening to a witch.

Well, not quite so for the witch. Since the witch uses the familiar to prepare spells then for the duration of the 1 day mourning period they are out of a way to prepare spells... period. That and a lengthy ritual that cant be performed on the fly makes it pretty difficult to function. Not to mention the fact that you lose any spells you taught that particular familiar from scrolls or otherwise. The good news however is that you get to pick new (and possibly different) spells you might not have had before!

Actually according to previews that aspect of the Witch is going away and the familiar is going to act as a conduit so that your spell list is not linked to the specific familiar. Though preparing spells without the familiar would still be a problem.

PS no I don't have links

Hmm... interesting, time will tell.

None, and nor should there be since the benefits of having one are quite marginal compared to a bonded object.

Agreed,

So long as you lose all the bonuses from that familiar and role play a little sorrow I think you're good.

I'd require a little time before they could summon an other one. ie... you have the stink of death on you for a little while.
