Technically speaking firearms aren't core as they aren't in the core rulebook. I'm not sure as to what sources they lay in, but I think the old campaign setting guide and adventurer's armory are your best bet. I don't have access to these so some search-fu might be in order.
EDIT: My erratic (at best) search-fu reveals that the Adventurer's Armory doesn't contain firearms rules, which means that the old campaign setting is where you need to look for anything vaguely core (though I'm pretty sure it's been stated that the book needs to be updated for pathfinder before it can be used officially).
IMO: Firearms should at least be martial since you can't just pick-up-and-smack-things like you can with any other simple weapon. Unlike a crossbow you have to know how to balance a heck of a kick to be able to use them, and for old-style muskets accidental misfires were a real danger. Also, being (presumably) rare in a medieval setting they'd probably have to be exotic to prevent every joe-blow warrior from being proficient.

The world of Golarion HAS firearms. This is a little bit of a design hickup. The issue is that the campaign book is not 100% compatible with the actual pathfinder system. There are no officially sanctioned rules for them, which is a real shame, and IMO a little bit ironic.
The good news however is that the campaign setting book is being revised as we speak and is slated for release this year. There will almost certainly be new/revised rules that are core to the system in that book.
