How many weapons can one fighter hold?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So i have read in books and seen in movies where the big bad fighter has a bunch of really big weapons strapped to his body, but could you really make that work for a fighter in dnd? Could he be Carrying a great sword, Great axe, and a Halberd? Or would it all have to be light to one handed weapons as in longsword, battle axe, and a rapier? I know there is a magic item( Cant think of the name) that holds like so many arrows, so many javelin, and a Couple bows. Is there a Melee magic item that can hold so many Light, one handed and 2 handed weapons? I wanted my fighter to have around 3-5 2-handed melee weapons on him at one time. Any help on my plans to make this fighter would really be helpful.

Thanks

The system doesn't care much how you're carrying what you are. You can even hold (but not wield) a two-handed weapon in one hand. So, as long as your strength is high enough you can cart around as many weapons as you like.

Well I know that in the rules as long as i have the str i can carry anything, but in the realy world, i dont think anyone can walk around with 4 great swords strapped to them and still be able to fight like they want to. I want to know of a Realistic way in dnd to have 3-5 greatswords on my character and be able to quick draw them when needed.

If you have a generous GM, you might be able to strap 3 greatsword sheaths onto your back; two in an x and one going straight down through the middle. I can't really see that being feasible with polearms or greataxes though.

Yea that is all i could really get out of it also was just 2 max 3. I might just stick with one handed weapons. I am sure i can fit the number i need on the fighters body. Just figured i would ask to see if anyone knew of a magic item or some way to get that many big weapons on one person realistically/magically.

Realistically? No chance.

Magically? I don't believe there's a current recognized option for a multi-melee weapon sheath. A GM could houserule an Efficient Quiver to serve a similar purpose I suppose.

Or you could just invest in a pack horse.

So I found the answer. When I said Magical means i went and looked in the Magic item compendium and i found a 2000 gold gold enchant called hideaway. As a swift action you can fold up the weapon 2 size categories smaller. Another swift action lets you unfold it to its normal size. So 5 greatswords all of which 2 sizes small would fight on the human body i think. With quick draw you can draw the small greatsword swift action make it normal size then Hit with it and repeat.

the last campaign i played in i had my own "calivans efficient scabbard" created. don't remember what me and the dm came up with though for price and effect. i think 1 2hnded, 2 medium, and 4 light weapons. when i ended the campaign my favorite combat mode was throwing 2 flesh grinding axes and closing in with my great sword. not much lived long lol :D i could hunt up my old sheet and give the effect and price. think the price was the same as an efficency quiver +1k or 2k for custom item.

This may seem irrelevant for what you are looking for, but once long ago, I played in a solo adventure with a fighter that;

1. Hired servant to carry a myriad of weapons for him. He had a big bag of weapons like a caddy carrying a golf bag. Much of it was for show, but it was kind of fun too.

2. He was paying someone to make essentially a magical floating caddy, a magical device that would hover near him, holding his assortment of weapons and items.

I believe the servant eventually became a squire, learning combat skills and food in exchange for pay.

Both nice ideas. I was wondering if there was a melee item the same as a efficiency quiver. Glad to hear you guys came up with one. The Weapon Caddy is also a Pretty cool idea, like a permanent invisible servant, or Floating Disk that is made too look like a Cylinder.

In one of my campaigns the Fighter and Barb each carry one 2H Weapon on their backs (Under Backpack against Back), one 2H Weapon in hand for combat, one 1H Weapon in on belt and a Missile Weapon du jour to the side of the Backpack. They have become used to ditching weapons on the ground when they need to switch. They also know that Missile weapons are not easily swapped and resort to them in specific fights.

In the other campaign, the Dwarf Fighter carries a Heavy Crossbow in hand and has all his other weapons in a Handy Haversack. In one fight, he pulled 7 different weapons out of his Haversack. The Fighter/Rogue in the group asked him, quite politely how many weapons did he have in his WarWagon. With a typical Dwarven gruff looking at his GM (Me) he said: "Not enough, yet!"

Magic bags, haversacks, quivers and the such help to alleviate all the encumberance issues for my groups. I do like the "calivans efficient scabbard" that RunebladeX described. Consider that idea SWIPED!! 8p

Squires were historically the way to pack around extra gear if you need a historical option.

Hope some of this helps

Have Fun out there!!
