Adventure from 10-20 whatcha got?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So lately I have alot of free time on my hands, since my group decided to take a break while everyone heads out on vacation for a bit, sadly my vacation ended last week. Now normally I have to work on my game, but since I got that prepared (for the most part), I'm going to design an adventure for high level play 10-20. The question is what to do? I just don't wanna type up one of my own adventures, because to me its boring. So here's where I want everyone to pitch in there idea's on what they would like to see. Dragons, vampires, lichs, giants, demon's etc. throw them out there and in 2 weeks from today i'll post part one of the adventure.

Ah what the heck, you don't see too many kraken villains...

Wow that's wide open. Without any direction it's hard to know what type of thing you are looking for and how difficult you want it to be for the players. For instance you could have the PCs captured by slavers and their gear/equipment sent off for sale.

Then have them rescued in the desert or some other barren land by a group lead by an Andoran something (Cavalier maybe?) that then enlists/inspires the PCs to help break the slaving ring. Being in the middle of nowhere you control what gear the PCs get which will dictate how difficult encounters will be and see how creative your PCs are.

Then you could go with a plot of the slaving ring taking all the weaker slaves off one way eventually ending up in possession of frost giants that are using the slaves to keep white dragon eggs warm to hatch them. And the stronger slaves are being taken somewhere else for sacrifices and to work forges or whatever in preparation for war. The sacrifices could be used to get the help of demons/devils. To go even farther you could have the whole war being instead by a 3rd party that knows it will lead to destruction of both sides or the victor greatly weakened and they have plans to clean up whoever is left. Sounds like something a Drow would do but I don't know how epic a Drow is so maybe you have the Drow controlled by yet something else. Or you could have the Drow doing the summoning from the Hells. That would give some baddies for a good battle.

Don't know if that is what you are looking for or if it even makes sense. That's just off the top of my head so it's probably a jumbled mess and I'm too lazy to proof read it or flesh it out.

I'd draw from the Superstar competition of two years ago. There were GREAT villains with complete stat blocks there, including one GULGA CENCH. They'll never suspect an otyugh.

Wouldn't one keep white dragon eggs cold to hatch them? ;)

Probably not; see March of the Penguins. Just because the beast is immune to cold doesn't make the eggs so.

If an adventure is going to culminate at level 20, i am of the opinion it should end with either a great wyrm dragon, a balor, or a tarrasque. I love fighting those big nasties but we get to do it so rarely.

The 18-20th level endgame for my local game is going to end in an aerial fight through flying constructs and things, leading to a flight down inside a vast nation-destroying construct to defeat the great wyrm empowring it from its core. :D

I try to do at least one high level adventure for my people every year. The ones that work the best and seem to be the most fun:

1. Wake up naked in the .... (1st level of hell, underdark in drow country, desert surrounded by elven slavers - that one was in DarkSun).

The idea being, if these are high level people (10th wouldn't do it, 15th at least), they should have skills enough to survive without all their fancy toys. And it's refreshing to see the wizards shriek for joy when they see a bat - 'Bat dung! Fireball spells! Oh happy day!. Or the fighters with seven feats concentrating on the greataxe that are thankful to get a short sword - at least I can give up on hitting things with a rock.
Helpful hint - have their stuff intact, at home, when they return. If they've spent years getting/building something special, it shouldn't PERMANENTLY disappear in boxed text, just temporarily.

Oh, and if waking up naked - stripped in boxed text - is too mean, you can use the 'Living Gate' idea. Nothing that is not alive can pass through. Thus they have to 'choose' to leave it all behind.

2. The outer planes - always a nice challenge. One quest that started as a trip down the river styx, somehow morphed into a quest to get a spoon from every different plane. Took them almost half a year in game time, but they still talk about that quest.

3. Drow raiding - If you have the old TSR D1-D3 and Q1 modules, you can find an incredible amount of background stuff on the Drow underdark. And they were NASTY! Converted to PF, there is no trouble challenging a high level group attempting to ..rescue a princess, retrieve a good artifact, get their hands on a whole lot of loot, etc.

What happens when you then have a sorceror, and a monk in the party kicking butt, and the great ax fighter, cleric and wizard twiddling their thumbs? Honestly doesnt sound like much of an enjoyable campaign to me. Too much imbalance on which classes/concepts rely on gear, and which do not.

So allow me to update my question, what would everyone like to see as the final encounter? Human warlord, dragons, demons?

Yes.

Nothing wrong with having them fight another group of level 18-20's. An evil group. Yes it is a lot of work to run a group of evil characters if it is 4 character sheets to be juggling each combat round, but if your PC's are tired of the same old Dragons and Mind Flayers, maybe let them face opponents that are truly on the same playing field as they are.

If It works with the story, having a big badass character on a big badass mount is a nice end game too.

Or if you have the table space, maybe have them take part in a battle between the heavens and hells? Lots of angels and demons on a huge battle mat, with the party stuck in the middle. Oh no!
