(Plus, in a place like Rochester where everyone is used to driving in snow, you see things that warm your heart, like the alternating-sides lineup at a red light. Seriously, when a row of traffic is approaching a red light here, you see one car glue to the left of the lane, the next drift right, the next left, etc, to give a little extra distance so they don't rear-end one another. They really do that.)
Is it good or bad that I just realized that I do this? I've been doing it all my adult life, and never even thought about it before. I guess I just assumed that's what everyone did.
I guess that's what you get for growing up in the North Country.

EDIT: naked armed Texas women dance for TotP?
I'm not sure Diane would approve.
I don't think any of them are normally armed. But, they have been breeding Spanish Mustangs for a while and have a habit of competing in cross-country trail riding competitions at the open level. I think the youngest won nationals a couple years back.
Funny thing about the youngest, she was being just way too daredevil and fell of the horse and got dragged probably a hundred yards with her foot caught in the stirrup.
How did she react after getting up bruised head to toe?
"Momma, I'm never riding again. Well, not for a day or two, anyway."
I also remember visiting them and being surprised at what my sister did to her oldest...
The oldest was riding bareback and had set the reins down on the horses neck while she talked to us. My sister sneaked over and slipped the reins off while her oldest wasn't paying attention and then slapped the horse real hard on its hind end sending it off in a fury.
She later said that she probably shouldn't have done it, but it was only a matter of moments before my neice had the horse back under her control despite not having reins, saddle, or stirrups.
My neices are amazing to watch on horses.

[pops in] The high in San Diego was 84 degrees today...just sayin' he he[/pops out]
The cool thing is that it still gets cold enough to be "snuggling weather" at night. I just need to get back into port so I can actually take advantage of that.
Stereotypical comments about sailors are neither required nor desired, thank you. ;)

Well, thanks for the responses.
On that note, this has to be something that someone made up and added to wikipedia. It is, isn't it?

The Thing from Beyond the Edge |

Apparently not, after a bit more poking around on snipes.
I'm still not convinced. :)
Note: The search that turned it up was just a by product of an animal search to find some useful "spirit animals" for my campaign. I also found out that "ghoul" has an Arabic mythology origin. That, I never would have guessed.

Can someone explain to me why finback whales are listed under mammals of the deserts of the American Southwest?
A resident population of 250 Finback Whales (Balaenoptera physalus) feed in the rich waters of the Gulf and are often seen in the Canal de Ballenas (Channel of the Whales), the deep chasm between the Baja mainland and Isla Angel de la Guardia. Finbacks, the second largest animal on the planet, are the most common whale within the island channels, although Killer Whales, Humpback Whales and Sperm Whales are also seen.
The Finback (also called Finner and Fin Whale) is exceeded in size only by its cousin, the Blue Whale; both are baleen, or toothless, whales. Finbacks can reach a length of 80 feet and weigh as much as 80 tons. The Finback is streamlined with a pointed snout, is milky-white underneath and gray-black on top. Its name comes from the extremely small, hooked fin on its back, which is only a foot long in adults. This huge predator feeds on krill, one of the tinniest of all shrimp-like crustaceans, as well as algae, codfish, herring, sardines, squid, anchovies and octupi. The Finback can remain underwater for 20 to 30 minutes before rising for air, but it is erratic in its cycle and is therefore difficult to track.
The Finback is extremely gregarious, showing no fear of boats and usually travels in pods of 15 to 20, although groups as large as 100 have been seen. The Finback is monogamous and is extremely affectionate and loyal to its partner. They breed May through August and give birth the following year to a 20- to 25-foot-long offspring, which is nursed for 6 months.

Yes they exist, just not in the USA
Yes, Ghuls are an Arabian demon.

I could ask my hubby Alex about that bird, he's a seabird biologist.

Just hot cocoa for me this morning. The lack of free starbucks coffee has turned me into a snooty brat who won't touch this crap we got now.
Ha! I'm pretty tolerant of mediocre or bad-ish coffee, but I'm waaaaaaay picky about my hot cocoa. Only brand in the grocery store I'll drink is the Ghirardelli cocoa mix.

I love hot cocoa. But sadly most of it is made with milk. I spend an inordinate amount of time looking for cocoa mix that doesn't include powdered milk. I'm especially fond of the Godiva dark chocolate cocoa.
And I'm totally with you on the coffee snobbery. I am so picky it's not even funny. :)

Mmmm, first cup of coffee of the morning. Creamer, splenda, and a heaping of brain bleach -- just how I like it.
Mmmmm...brain bleach. Nothing like a fresh new brain to start your day. On the down side the zombies also find it tastier, but I guess that does provide a good motivation to keep up on the exercise routine. ;)

Haven't seen the Lad O Lakes cocoa before. But yeah, if I lived anywhere near the Ghirardelli plant in California, I'd look like Veruca Salt post-Wonka.
