Venedictos finishes the spot of breakfast he got at the tavern (yes, his second breakfast today) and mentions that perhaps the rest of them should also be heading out after Denis. He pushes the chair back and heads to the door and out, freeing Modestine from the tie-up.

Venedictos humbly suggests that those who are familiar with the wilderness outside of town should obviously be the ones to navigate their course.

Denis smiles to the man nods, smiling lightly at the idea of doing a little sparring. He had a thought and agreed to this.
"I could do with learning some sword play." he draws out his sword, raising it up and making sure to practive his finess with the short sword, starting off slow and for them both to speed up when they feel comfortable with their performance. As they sparred he noticed the human used considerable strength to his advantage, but also that he was a skilled fighter too and deflected Denis's blows pretty well, stopping whenever the large blade would rest on a vital part whenever Denis dropped his guard, but he too had a few tricks thrusting his blade, thrusting it over and under the defences in his armour and past his weapon, stopping short of the vital points. they seemed evenly matched, though Denis was sure he would not be able to win in a stand up fight but only if the fighter had his back turned. It was strange but as they did this, Denis felt he was gaining a connection with a real person outside his family for the first time.

"Yer a pretty fast one, I thought as much from your first swings"[b] stops for a moment [b]"You also fight a bit dirty" He winks to make sure Denis get's the joke about how the combat styles are diffrent "Well you can pin point openings in my armor and really nice hand-eye coordination but yer lacking in the strangth to push it in better, get some muscles and beard, will make you look better and hit harder" luaghs a bit and continues to spar with Denis actually show him a bit of his Ulfen fighting style based on strength of arms and using his reactions to parry and defend rather than precise and accuracy to hit certain points.

Kiptera sighs, ”What’s one more gonna harm? We give up stealth for strength in numbers. Come on. Ain’t got time to argue and we should be going. Mercy, could you stay with her and help her pack what she needs for an extended “harvesting trip”? I’ll head back and get the group heading west of town. Catch up when you can. The first day is always a wash when it comes to distance traveling with a group. We’ll stick to the main route for now. ” She turns and walks out without another word.
As she returns to the Everfull Mug, there is quite an audience and what looks but doesn’t sound quite like a fight. Even the sheriff is standing on a wagon but doing nothing. ”Please no more distractions.” Kip grumbles. She grabs Dimple’s reins, clambers up, briefly checks her gear before settling in saddle. Announcing loudly above the swordplay and peanut gallery, ”WHAT A WONDERFUL TURNOUT! I HOPE EVERYONE BROUGHT THEIR OWN SWORDS FER DIS HERE KOBOLD HUNTING PARTY! THIS IS AN ARMY!” Snickering to herself,”that should clear them right out.”
As the crowd disperses and the group starts to collect she’ll state ”For those who don’t have horses, we’ll keep a slow but steady pace. But lets head out now, daylight is a-burning! We’re heading west along the main trail as long as possible before we break for the mountains. This will be fun and please note -that is sarcasm.” She turns Dimple towards the road that’ll lead them west and sets her horse at a walk. Yep, gonna be a beautiful day. I love the shakedown phase and the weather is actually pleasant.

Before we head off into the unknown , I think there are something I must tell you .
I did some checks and in fact nobody around here has seen any kobolds in fact , there has been no suspicious disparition of livestock either. The only information I have is that kobolds might have attacked the city of Kern but it's only second-hand rumor (if not fourth or five ). I must admit that I'm a bit surprised there. If their numbers are great enough to attack a city , your village will indeed have a problem . I would suggest moving towards Kern and speak to people on the road to have a better idea of what we should do . Now this might take some times so bring enough rations ...
This bring me to my second point. We did not yesterday speak of what each of us can do .We should try to have an idea of who needs protecting in a fight , who can do magic and so on . I'll begin . I did do classes in the militia and so can fight but I would say I'm only a fair fighter as it is not my vocation . Erastil has seen fit to give me some healing powers and I am a fair negociator as I am used to speaking . but I'm sure you noticed this already ... Now i wolud suggest my place will be to defend the non combatants in our group from attacks . what about you all ?

It was just like Simon to lead things off. He was such a leader and he attended services faithfully. He was such a dream. Not like Denis whom her mother told her to always avoid. To think that Simon was offering to defend the non-combatants which meant Simon would be protecting her.
It was enough to give a girl goosebumps.
Think, think, think, what could she do.
Raising her hand, even though no one else seemed to be doing it, Isis said, 'I can heal.'
Realizing she had the attention of the gathered group, she stammered, 'A bit.'
Seeing all the eyes looking at her, she plunged forth with, 'And I know a few spells like how to make people sleep. And, I, and I can punch. Not like a girl but like a real person and make it hurt. Oh, wait, that's a witch's secret, so, like, forget that I said that.
'And I've got Skitter here. Say hello to everyone Skitter,' she shows her pet lizard and moves one of its legs to wave hello.
'And I've got Bear,' she says showing her mule. She knew she should stop. Why couldn't she stop?
'And I've got sticks!' She pulls forth from a side pouch one of her throwing clubs. 'You know, to throw...and, ah, I'm shutting up now. I'm sorry, forget that I'm here. Not saying another word, uh, uh, not another word. Quiet, like a mouse.' Isis moves her hand across her mouth indicating how it was going to stay shut.

"Don't worry, you just go on the front line and I'll find the openings in their hides." Denis seemed to have ended up smiling a lot more, though he still kept his hood up however with his tail moving around it was obvious that he wasn't natural and the light outside made his face more visable, though he tried not to make eyecontact, still focusing on looking at the ground "Have you had much experience with Kobolds?" he asks, interested in learning more about the enemy before they run into them. He didn't know how they'd even communicate with them, but he was more interested in them getting rid of them and returning as battle-hardened warriors.

Kiptera watches from her saddle, nodding with approval with the introductions. Aaahh, finally some useful introductions and so far no bad blood. This group is starting to coalecse. "Thank you Simon, for addressing a most important part of our success. My name is Kiptera. I am a Ranger by profession and local woodland guide by choice. Usually when I lead folk out, they're well acquainted with each other, and I provide direction, local game advise and parental supervision to those suddenly free of civilized laws. So out of habit, I may be brisk, bossy and "hands-free" at the same time. You're all adults, briefly glances at Isis, so if you attempt to do something foolish, like poke a sleeping bear, I'll recommend you don't but I ain't gonna stop ya. I'll watch him maul ya a bit then step in. Sounds cruel but it matures kids up fast. Thats my usual spiel. And no, Denis, I have not yet hunted Kobolds although my people have clashed with the beast for ages. I grew up with many a bedtime story involving them as well as part of my official training. As I understand it, we are seeking the answer to one question and only one question. Are there aggressive kobold tribes on the warpath? Once we establish ya or nay, I am heading back. We are not a warparty ready for assault. Any questions?" Kiptera pauses for any then points to the next person to speak up. "You're up."
My goal is to post at min three times: morning, lunch and evening. Regardless of wher the timeline is, I may advance it a bit or just add character fluff. If I am short on time, I'll try to let ya'll know my likely future actions so you can post based on that. "You sure you need all of that? Eh, oh well. Come on, let's get going." She heads off with Isis back to where the group is staying...
Kiptera pauses for any then points to the next person to speak up. "You're up."
"I'm Mercy," she says with a nod, stepping into the circle to introduce herself. "I'm a barmaid by trade but a warrior by birthright, I guess. I know how to use any weapon in the armory that isn't arse-backwards or two tacked together, and I'm rather proud of being good at it. I can wear armor as good as any man, I'm tough, I'm big. I don't think I'll need protecting, but it's always flattering.
"I can tell that maybe some of you are worried about my eyes, and, uh, don't be. I'm just as good with my polearm as the day my vision blurred up, and that isn't changing. In the dark, I see twice as well as I used to. I just need some help-- if something is a ways away from me, I'd truly appreciate it if someone could discretely whisper me what's going on or what's happening or who is speaking or what direction to travel in. If we all end up separated, maybe running from a creature beyond my vision, I'm in for a world of misfortune, so I'd love for some simple cues-- where to run, where to go, what's about to ambush us, that kind of thing. I can see about thirty feet at the most, so keep that in mind.
"Besides that, I've been told I've got the gift for gab, and since I have a feeling I'm not quite showing it here you'll have to take my word on it. I know a few things about machinery and architecture and such, and a little about religion I picked up when I was young. I guess that's all there is about me, so, um, someone else now?" Mercy steps back into the circle, feeling uncomfortable and a little embarrassed for just asking the entire group to carry her dead weight along. She just hoped they didn't see what she had just said as negatively as she did.
Venedictos
"Well, I'm not much for weapons or fighting, although I do know my way around my glaive, and of course I have the divine gifts of Shelyn to offer: spells and bursts of healing. I can also offer little bits of luck to people next to me and throw lightning about as far as Mercy can see."
"Of course, I'm also here for spiritual guidance and moral support."
Denis Dubosc
Denis struggles with this as he doesn't feel comfortable with introduceing himself with everything, especially since they're strangers and he was never much of a people person.
You better step forward. Get all the pressure out of the way. It'll only mount if you're the last one to say anything. at this voice he nodded and stepped forward.
"My name is Denis." he starts and then pulls the hood down now, revealing his face. His face by itself without the markings of a Tiefling heritage was handsome, but it was that which held him back. He had two goat horns on the side of his head, yellow goat-like eyes that also had pupils shaped in the same fashion and as he spoke now with the hood down the perceptive would be able to see that he has a forked tongue as he speaks and his tail sways behind him. A demonic looking thing with a arrow point at the end. "I am what is known as a Tiefling. There is demonic blood running through me, though no one knows who my father was and that effected my growing up, somewhat." he stammers a bit, afraid of the eyes that were gazing upon him from the group, but he felt that some of them he had made somekind of kinship with. He was incredibly tall to, up to 6ft and 4 inches, towering over most people and with a slender figure. It was hard for him to speak with the group and his eyes darted around everyone and to the villagers who too notice of the group nervously, gulping as he continued to speak. "I've learnt to hide in shadows and have a natural nack of it. I also know a few languages that might help the group. Kobolds are lizard creatures and I have learnt the language of Dragons so I hope I will be able to understand them. There is nothing else I feel that I should add." he nods and then heads back in line into the circle, pulling the hood back up and feeling more comfortable in the shadows, looking around at everyone, interesting in learning about the people he will be fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with or back-to-back.Yes, learn from them. Then at the critical moment you can drive the blade into their hearts. Assess how powerful they are and who should go down first! Denis groans, trying to hide the pain as he fights the strange compulsion that has followed him for many years. I will not. Quiet voices, I don't wish to ruin my reputation with this group like you have helps ruin mne as I was younger. the voices in his mind get louder, but over the years he's grown to ignore them and pretend nothing is wrong.
Brevaddelar
Brev looks at Denis in fascination. "What magnificent horns!" he mutters, and then regains his composure.
"My name is Brevaddelar," he says to the group, "but, if you find that difficult to pronounce, most people just call me Brev. I'm not really a weapon person, although I have my staff and a sling in case of emergency. But I'm not at my best toe-to-toe with other creatures. What I can help you out with is a little bit of magic. With a little bit of luck, I should be able to put many of our opponents to sleep or at least daze them long enough for our warriors to knock them about a bit. I also have a knack for making people laugh, although to do that magically, I need to be up close, which is really a last resort. But I'm pretty good at making people laugh in more mundane ways too." He smiles and pauses a moment. "Now, let's see, what else? Oh yes, I'm experienced at living off the land, and so can be of assistance in getting us around and finding food and such. I'm probably not as good at that as our friend Kiptera here, but I'm certainly willing to lend a hand."

"Nice sticks."
Isis was first pleased with Mercy's words and then thinking more on it realizes that it was probably more sarcastic. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Why did she constantly say stupid things? She was surrounded by serious warriors with real weapons, even named inherited blades for gosh sake, and she is telling them she's got a bag of throwing sticks.
She's such a village peasant. They'll be laughing for years around campfires of the girl that brought sticks to a kobold hunt.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
She'd beat her head with her fists if she didn't think it made her more stupid looking.

Isis couldn't help but blush and wither an extra two inches under Kiptera's eyes. She felt like a ton of grain being dragged along.
They had a real healer with Venedictos who followed a real god and Mercy was sworn to a god of Battle.
Her bit of healing touch was nothing compared to theirs. She was just a silly girl bumpkin among serious people with big world experience.
A bear mauling her might be kinder than having to spend days looking like she knew nothing of the wide world.

Now knowing what each person is capable of, the party sets off, Kiptera able to follow Simon's directions and get them on the way to the village (sorry its a village, not a town, sorry I said the wrong thing earlier) of Kern.
The first two days go by relatively uneventful. Hunters are able to gather food. Good campsites are founds, tales are told and songs are sung before bed at night and the watches go by uneventful.
However on the third day, while still about a day away from Kern, Kitpera notices (from her awesome survival role) what appears to be kobold tracks, nearly a dozen that are no more than 20 minutes old.
The tracks appear to go to the southeast while you are all traveling west.
The environment is grassy with several trees, a thin forest with mature trees.

Sheesh. Play a game with the kids and three days passed online with a kobold fight 20 minutes away. And BTW Mercy, You could have left the post to help advance the timeline. It would have been totally in character for Kiptera.
Kiptera stops suddenly with a decidedly focused look. She drops from her horse. An intense but lowered voice you're not used to comes from Kiptera. "Shhhh. Stop. Let me look at this before you go further. She examines the road, disappears into the forest to the SE briefly, backtracks across the road to the NW and returns. Kobolds are definitely here, Tracks are fresh. No more than 30 min. I'll show you what I see so you may help keep an eye out for the same. You wont be trackers by any means just more eyes less likely to make mistakes. We won't lose too much time and I want to secure the horses at a safe distance.
DMX (ha sounds nice dont it?) I'll make a knowledge check as to why Kobolds would be out scouting during daylight. Knowledge 1d20 ⇒ 1 +6 for Geo or Nature. No other trained knowledge. OUCH! It wasn't meant to be.
Another check to determine likely destination of Kobolds 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15 Geo and estimated amount of kobolds 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 Track=1/2Survival plus level
All right we have a war council now. Lets talk. While she does this, she is quickly pulling out and donning armor, pulling gear and prepping. Back and forth showing the tracks to another person, grabbing another piece to hang on belt or adjusting backpack from survival to combat gear, while they examine a bit.

Isis hears the word that kobolds are only 30 min away and she feels a tightening in her stomach. The two days of jaunting through the woods has suddenly become much more dangerous.
She begins to look left and right seeing shapes and shadows behind every stone and rock.
She whispers under breath,
Using Message spell range 100' and lasting 10 min per casting, line of sight not required.
'Hi, Kiptera. Its me, Isis. I don't want the others to know. You can talk back and I'll hear you. What should I do?
Knowledge (Nature) to locate plants for potions during the previous two days. 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Knowledge (History) now that we have the history of the town for the last 30 years and I've spent 17 years growing up in town, what do I know of past Kobold activity in the area and the clearing of monsters in the area. Any tales of adventures or monster caves? 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Come closer, you are part of this council too and your voice will be heard, even if it is yes or no."

Kiptera: As best as you can tell, there is no reason for them traveling during the day. Maybe it's a new breed of Kobold who worships the sun. (Lol, sorry couldn't resist.)
From the little distance you have seen the tracks, and from the way they are spread out, they don't seem to be traveling far. You count 10 distinct kobold tracks, although you think their could be two more that are very similar. 10-12 is your best guess.
Isis: You have been able to find fresh blue berries to lift everyones spirits, but being so overwhelmed by the experience of the past two days, you haven't been able to notice anything of real value.
You've heard of stories from old war veterans and woodsmen who have fought a few scattered kobolds, but mostly stories of kobolds in they area are told to scare children.

Stealth Take 10 +2 Dex = 12
Isis look over her shoulders at the horses and her mule.
[whispering]'What of the horses and mule? We can't sneak along and keep them with us. I don't think Bear would know to hide behind a tree even if there was a big enough trunk for him to hide behind.'[/whispering]
Keeping Message spell up with Kiptera as long as she stays within 100'. If she goes beyond that range then will switch to message with Mercy.
To be ready in case of a fight, Isis pulls out a pair of throwing sticks/clubs and holds them in her left hand. In her right hand she prepares the components for a sleep spell.
Simon Bornen
Seeing the others beginning to move with Kiptera and Denis , Simon can't help himself
'What on earth are you doing! Caelin, I thought you were experienced! Moving along the scouts with a big metal armor is a definite BAD idea! Let them do their things and come back to us then . Now Kiptera, do you want us to stay there or follow at a discrete distance and if so at which distance ? "

Kiptera listens to all who have spoken up. And the points made are certaily valid. "Mercy, I agree, normally splitting up the party severely reduces the overall response to any problems we may encounter. Normally. But we are trying to just gather information at this point. Simon, yes, Excellent idea to follow at a discrete distance. Just far enough to be able to track us, I'll leave an obvious blazed trail for you to find. If Denis and I get into trouble, hopefully you'll be able to give us some respite under attack or prepare for hostilities as we run back to ya'll. Isis, As long as the horses are at a discrete distance we should bring them. McHern, tell you what. If I start playing with kobolds, I'll make sure to invite you to the party with a gold-engraved RSVP."
Kiptera thinks for a moment, looks around."You know thats not a bad idea. Anyone have a whistle or chalk?" Kiptera shakes her head. "Note to self: add this to my shopping list when we get back."
If no one does, she'll head out with Denis and let the party police itself with their own individual actions. If Mchern insists on following, she'll glare at him, and tell Denis to go a separate but parallel way incase of a flanking manuver by the Kobolds. And he wouldn't get lost if he kept us within sight or sound. Great the party is now split three ways, at least it is only ten of the buggers. It'll get messy but I guess we are poking the sleeping bear.
Kiptera has a light crossbow readied as she tracks.
Venedictos
Venedictos is no fool and quite content to stay at the back with the other clunkers.
Stealth: 1d20 ⇒ 4 He hums as he walks into every tree and crashes into every bush in the place.
Edit: oh, I see people are taking 10. Probably a good idea for tubby here.

Kiptera thinks for a moment, looks around."You know thats not a bad idea. Anyone have a whistle or chalk?" Kiptera shakes her head. "Note to self: add this to my shopping list when we get back."
Isis thinks to hold up her stick for a moment to show that is all she brought with her.
A whistle? Chalk? Were they going to be calling a dog to them? Maybe Kobolds were frightened of loud pitched noises or maybe Kobolds were like dogs and could be summoned with the right noise.
But what of the chalk? She hadn't heard that Kobolds like chalk. Do they eat it? Is it like candy to be put as bait in a trap? Isis only used chalk when she was helping her mom do rituals. She wondered if she might still have a small piece in her spell component pouch.
Spellcraft (check to see if have a bit of chalk in spell pouch or healing kit <chalk is used medically to help with some things like upset stomach>1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
If I have some chalk then Isis will give it to Kiptera looking very pleased at herself for thinking of it.

If Isis has chalk...
Kiptera graciously accepts this, "Thanks Isis, I use this to quickly and quietly draw arrows on tree/rocks to let you guys know where we went. Easier to follow signs than tracks. You've saved us some valuable time and made my job easier. She thinks, Resourceful she is, hope she doesn't need it back soon. I don't need to mother her, she has that already. Leave her be and she'll blossom on her own. No favoratism and no vindictiveness. Karma is a great equalizer.
If Denis, McHern and her have departed. I know I rolled stealth and track. If the timeline advances without me:
Init 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Crossbow attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Confirm crit 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 Dmgx2
Dmg 1d8 ⇒ 8
I already mentioned her tactics in previous post.
Caelin McHern
"At ease Simon! pats Simon on the shoulder "You are right, but I'm not following them all the way in just closer then you guys incase they get into big problems" keeps moving to be a link between the scouts and the group behind
Stealth check to Move silently 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (20) - 2 = 18
Mercy Ülricsdottir
Mercy gathers herself, feels a bit put-off and realizes she's not the boss anyways. "Alright. We'll just keep quiet back here. If we hear yelling, we're coming down there. Until then, we'll lay low."
I'm not sure if we can take 10 there.
Can always take ten if we're not in immediate danger or distracted. It just means we're taking our time instead of hurrying. If we all were trying to move pretty quickly up to flank the kobold warband, we'd have to roll, but since those of us who are taking ten are now, under Kiptera's guidance, just sitting quietly in the underbrush and trying not to be seen, we can take ten.

Kiptera and Denis begin tracking the kobolds and do fairly well for a while. However after about 5 minutes the tracks lead into an open field and it's hard to follow the tracks. It takes a few minutes to get back on track but Kitptera finds the tracks leading almost directly south back into the forests.
You notice you are gaining on the tracks and think you are about 10 minutes away.
Yes, Isis has chalk in her component bag, not because of the roll, but because she has a reasonable reason for why she would have had it. I award role-playing more than roll-playing. Good job guys.
However, that being said, I need some Perception checks. [Evil DM Laugh] Mwwuaahahahahaha[/Evil DM Laugh].
