Legacy of Fire Trait Question

Legacy of Fire

We are about to start the Legacy of Fire adventure path and I am looking at the Player's Guide's campaign traits. Now, since we are playing under modern Pathfinder rules, rather than v3.5 Pathfinder rules, some of the traits don't translate very well.

One in particular that I am considering taking is the FINDING HALEEN campaign trait, which says "[Choose a favored class,] this class is always a favored class to you, and your dedication to it is such that every time you take a level in the class, you gain +1 hit point and 1 additional skill point over and above what you would normally gain."

What does it mean by the last statement (in bold)? Did the v3.5 Pathfinder campaign guide already have rules for gaining bonus HP or skill ranks, like in Modern Pathfinder? If I take this trait, would I thus gain my choice of favored class bonus (+1 HP or 1 rank) IN ADDITION TO +1 HP AND 1 rank from this trait?

If so, that's kind of broken.

In short, what EXACTLY do I get from this trait in the context of modern Pathfinder rules? What did it grant under the v3.5 rules?

It's been a while since I played 3.5, but I believe this trait means you gain +1 hitpoint over and above what you get from rolling your hit points and adding Con bonus at your new level and +1 skill point over and above what you normally get at your new level (i.e., x + Int bonus).

Scarab Sages

The way we played it was that instead of having to choose +1hp or +1 skill point (as pathfinder has with favored classes), you got both.

Every level in your favored class you get +1 hp and +1 skill point. No extras, no choosing.

Ah. So if we were to take its wording exactly as is, and use it in modern Pathfinder, then I would get my favored class bonuses as normal, and in addition get +1 hp and +1 rank per level?

Not in my game...

The way I adjudicated this is that you get +1 hp and +1 skill rank each time you level in the selected class. Much like enhancement bonues do not stack, favoured class bonuses do not stack is the justification for this ruling.

Yes, if you chose to run the 3.5 AP as written without conversion with PfRPG characters.

Not broken. Not even close, even if they stack with favored class bonuses, which they should. 20 hit points and skill points over 20 levels is not terribly amazing, just useful. I (along with half my players) find better mileage out of Reclaiming Your Roots, as free masterwork equipment or magic items at creation is hard to disagree with.

I have to say I agree it is broken if it stacks. Otherwise you are effectively getting Toughness Feat and a couple of Skill Focus feats for the cost of a trait. And traits are supposed to be equal to HALF of a feat not three+ feats over 20 levels.

I would house rule it in as getting both the HP and SP for every level of favored class you take as opposed to choosing. Still very good, but better then say having +40 HP and +20 HP at level 20.

Liberty's Edge

Personally, I think the Finding Haleen trait is overpowered as written, no matter whether the player gets +1 HP and +1 SP over and above their Favored Class bonus or whether they only get +1 HP or +1 SP to supplement their Favored Class bonus.

Traits are supposed to be equivalent to half-a-feat. If the player sticks to their Favored Class, at the very least this trait is equivalent to the Toughness feat. Unbalanced.

I plan on house-ruling this as it making the Player's starting class a Favored Class, beyond what get due to their race, as well as giving them +1 HP and +1 SP to start with, but that's all. This gives them something similar to the Half-Elf ability to have multiple Favored Classes (depending upon what they choose) and a little bonus to top it off.
