Multiclassing and spells

3.5/d20/OGL

Right now I am a Wizard 5/Alienest 2. Now the Alienest class for spells say "+1 existing spellcasting class". So right now I have access to the spells of an 7 lvl Wizard. So my question is what happens if I take my next lvl in Wizard? Do I now have access to spells of an 8 lvl Wizard or do I gain no spell lvls?

You will advance in 1 spellcasting class for your spellcasting abilities as if you had gone up 1 level in that class. In your case, you will be able to cast spells as a wizard that has gained a level. You will still be a Wizard 5 but your wizard class casting will be just as if you were a Wizard 6. Every level you get that says "+1 existing spellcasting class" will do that. If you advance farther in Wizard you will still gain spellcasting levels and you can get more of the Wizard bonuses like the Feat you get from time to time, save adds, and BAB adds. I hope that explains it !

To help clear it up, ONLY your casting increases. Your Familiar will remain the familiar of a Wizard 5 (unless the PrC specifies that it also advances your familiar; I'm not very knowledgeable about Alienist) and you won't gain any Wizard Bonus Feats.

You will also not get the "free new spell known" that a Wizard would get every time they level up, meaning you will only be able to learn new spells from scrolls. So every time you level to a point where your casting would increase to a new Spell Level (in this case, Wiz5/Ali2) you will need to buy or find scrolls so you can learn 4th level spells to put in your new spell slots.

Hope that's clear enough :)

Most often people that get into PrCs do not go back to the Core/Base class, so this situation rarely comes up.

Look at it the simple way. You're a Wiz6/Alienist2, and should have whatever such a character has. This means that you have the spells and CL of a Wiz8 but no other benefits. I'd give you the normal bonus spells a Wizard going from Wiz5-Wiz6 would get, rather than one going from 7-8.

Basically, there should be no real difference between you and a guy who went 6 levels of Wizard and then took 2 of Alienist. You shouldn't receive benefits for out-of-order advancement, but you also shouldn't be penalized.

I missed that he was taking a 6th level of Wizard. My apologies!

Last I checked the wizards free spells specified that they were "any level the wizard can cast" which means he could get 4th level spells that way. I see no reason at all he couldn't.

We generally allow characters who are multiclassed wizards to also gain the 2 free spells known. Yes, it's not listed as being an option now (at least when I examined the arcane archer), but it fits into the spirit of the rules.

For the wizard/alienist, you'll gain new spells per day and spells known when you go from wiz5/Al2 to wiz6/al2. Any abilities based on wizard level, such as the abilities of a familiar, will advance as well.

I don't allow that, but that is mainly because I am very generous about scrolls when there is a wizard in the party. I tend to add in a lot of extra scrolls. After all the selling point of the wizard over the sorcerer is they can know a massively wider selection of spells. If the GM isn't that generous then definately give them the two bonus spells.

IIRC, in 3.5 that rule I quoted was the actual case, don't remember for sure. In our campaigns, it's often us out in the middle of nowhere for long periods of time; we might well gain several levels with no access to a city, town, or anyone else while we romp through the wilderness. It's kinda necessary for us.

Thanks for the help guys, I underand it now.

As another option to consider you may want to check out The Complete Arcane, near the back of the book where it talks about war mages you'll see two optional feats one is Collegiate Mage. It doubles the amount of spells a mage gets for free. Basically goes from 2 perlvl to 4. Trust me I take it when ever I can between that and Spellcasting prodigy my casters are a major help to the party.

Neither have I. If ever I play a wizard this will be a must have.
