Ring of Spell Storing

Rules Questions

Question

Can you add spell with a target of "you" into a ring of spell storing ?

so you can potentially get spell like Blink onto the melee fighter ?

sure on the minor ring its only for 3 rounds but hell thats 3 rounds of 50% misses and 1/2 area dmg

and you can recharge it after the fight.

yes no ?

Sigh. This is yet another one of those times where I wonder if the most high game designers (blessed be their d20s) are trying to make things difficult.

The questionable sentence is the first one: "A minor ring of spell storing contains up to three levels of spells (either divine or arcane, or even a mix of both spell types) that the wearer can cast."

Taking out the parenthetical, you get, "A minor ring of spell storing contains up to three levels of spells that the wearer can cast."

So does, "...that the wearer can cast," mean "that the wearer is then able to cast?" Or does it mean that the ring holds up to 3 levels of spells "limited to those that the wearer can cast?"

Traditionally, I think that the ring of spell storing has been used by non-spellcasters. So I would go with letting anyone use it. Give the fighter something nice. They're always whining about that. :)

It's 18k gold pieces to cast a few low level spells per day which have to be recharged. Heck yes it allows fighters to cast shield or blink.

This line also suggests being applicable to fighter

The user need not provide any material components or focus to cast the spell, and there is no arcane spell failure chance for wearing armor (because the ring wearer need not gesture).

Taken to its maximum potential

Major ring of spell storing 10 levels of spells so you can get a 9th level spell on there

So Form of the Dragon 3 or Giant Form 2 could potentially be thrown onto a fighter.

Or an idea I had ages ago of an antimagic field fighter, have that on a ring and the fighter and just charge into the room of mages and giggle his ass off as the heads start flying hehehe.

@Ogre
for 1 feat you can reduce that 9k with forge ring and cleric

The crafting cost is relative. Reducing the cost by crafting it likewise reduces the cost of comparable items also. The point is it's expensive because it opens the doors for non-casters to do stuff. For a wizard the ring isn't not as useful as a staff or any of several other similarly priced items.

The Major ring of spell storing costs 200k/ 100k crafted. It opens up some cool things for fighters to do but is again pretty weak for a wizard for the price.
