Going to run Kingmaker... but I don't have a good feel for the world....

Kingmaker

Okay, we are pretty much dumping 4e and switching to PFRPG. I have been volunteered to run it. :)

Anyway, these are the products I purchased:

Core book
Bestiary
Gods & Magic
Kingmaker
Guide to the River Kingdoms

I have read through King Maker several times now and I think I am ready to run it. One of the things I am worried about is I don't have any real maps of the World. I don't have a good feel of what is around the Stolen Land or what is going on in general.

Do you recommend any other products I can get? I wish the map of the inner sea was out, but its not.

This may help. Take a look around. I'm sure someone will be by here as well to answer questions.

I think for the most part you should be "good to go" with those. Paizo has been great about making sure that the articles in the Adventure Path volumes include all you need beyond the core books. For example, the write up on Brevoy in Stolen Land expands on what is in the Gazetteer and Campaign Setting, offering more detail on what is likely to the neighbor with the most interest/influence on the campaign.

If you really want to pick up something, I recommend the Gazetteer. It has a good deal of the information from the Campaign Setting, enough to cover until the Inner Sea guide comes out. Other than that, the wiki mentioned by tdewitt274 is also very helpful.

I would also recommend downloading the Traits rules.

I agree, those books (and the Wiki) should give you everything you need. There are some forums that discuss the climate of the area to give you a good idea of that. It has also been stated (in another thread) that George R.R. Martin's Westeros was a prime inspiration for Brevoy so if you've read them you can use alot of the atmosphere and spirit of the game. If you haven't, you should. SO good.

Paizo are updating their Campaign Setting from 3.5 to PFRPG so you will have to wait until September for this.

You should have everything you need once you have downloaded the traits pdf.

If your not sure about Galt, Razmiran or something else that pops up in the Guide To The River Kingdoms then you can probably just use the wiki to clue you in.

You can also find a map here. The resolution is not great, but you can still make out what countries are around River Kingdoms. And even though it's not updated to PRPG, I would still recommend purchasing at least a PDF of the Campaign Setting, which includes a poster map of Golarion with much better resolution than the above.

I will probably go ahead and get the PDF, can't hurt.

I also am worried about keeping the game exciting and high energy since I have no experience really running sandbox style.

The players are more use to being lead by the nose.

I would down load the Players Guide as well

You can, of course, turn down the sandbox elements of Kingmaker. The best and easiest way to do this is to have the PCs have an advisor of sorts; this could be a nobleman exiled from Brevoy who's there to give guidance on where to go next, or it could be something more mystical in the form of a spirit or even visions from a deity. However you set it up, the "advisor" should be in the form of something the PCs would trust, and you shouldn't use it to ever lead the PCs into a trap or ambush. Something like, "There's a band of bandits about 20 miles south; go get them!" and then when the PCs do so, a second order of "The bandits have a fort south on Tuskwater; go get them!"

You can even use the various quests in the sidebars and inside covers to help give the PCs guidance; that's the main purpose of those quests, after all! They should really help to give a party some focus and obvious goals.

Yeah, Kingmaker Player's Guide is free, so you should definately download that, if you haven't already.

Me likie much. If your player's haven't run through Curse of the Crimsion Throne it would be a good place to use a Harrow Deck (Paizo has a very nice actual printed deck that make a lovely table prop) and a Varasin fortune teller and diviner.

Wooohoooooo! Welcome to the family. I am confident it will be a decision you'll not regret.

I concur with the other posts here - you have what you need; along with the wiki and the PDF of the campaign setting, you'll get a good flavor of the campaign - such as the various human ethnicities etc.

As for your concern on the sandbox style; something else you can do to supplement your efforts, is pull out an old 3.5 module(s) or dungeon magazine quests that fit for the terrain and style, and have that as an underlying quest so that PCs have some sort of direction while the exploration continues in the periphery.

I usually have a PC receive a vision of iron rails laid over wooden slats in the direction of the next objective.

It works remarkably well..
