I got a hypothesis, but it needs more data.
What's the first thing that comes to mind when you see these words? Do they bring up positive or negative feelings?

And now to mix it up.

Set One
2. Animaniacs (positive)
3. The Jester from Devil May Cry (negative)
Set Two
2. Animaniacs again (positive)
3. I got stuck on this one and spent a minute or so trying to visualize her. Don't see female jester characters often. Ended up rebounding back to Harley Quinn. (neutral)
Geekiness is apparently the antidote to "clowns are creepy" syndrome. Who knew.

2. Uh, a mime. Neutral, really.
3. Harlequins. Tricksters. MSPA, for some reason. Positive, overall.
2. Uh, a female mime. I really don't care that much about mimes.
3. Harley Quinn. A crazy woman wearing clown make-up. Attractive, but probably going to stab you. Both positive and negative.

Set one
Indifferent, I thought along the lines of center of attention/fool.
Set two
I thought: sexier fool.
Though I blame it on just recently completing Batman Arkham Asylum and their portrayal of Harley Quinn.

Huh. A number of results skew exactly as expected, but not nearly as uniformly. Had a lark about the familiarity of different breeds of buffoonery and varying places in the uncanny valley leading to a predictable level of acceptance for each.
I'm really surprised by the lack of fear in some cases.

1. Negative

3. Positive
4. Negative
5. Neutral
6. Neutral
I find the second sample redundant as Clown, Mime, and Jester are gender non-specific.
The fact that it was grammatically redundant annoyed me thus skewed my answers for the second part of the question.

1st group: circus, silence, court
neutral2nd group: circus silence court
slightly positive.
I am a male heterosexual. I tend to respond positively to female anything.
I'd rather watch female clowns, mimes, and jesters than male ones.

1. IT. negative
2. annoying. negative
3. annoying, but comical. lots of D&D class connotations. neutral I suppose
1. I dislike clowns but it's kind of hard to hate a female clown. Nothing sexual whatsoever.
2. annoying. negative but probably less so than a male mime. maybe it's because I might punch a male mime if he was annoying enough but I wouldn't ever punch a female mime no matter how annoying she got.
3. kinda hot in a Mardi Gras harlequin kind of way.

3. Royalty
I guess I think in colours?
And no positive or negative feelings immediately. A second later, though, MIME HATE (meme from a game).
2. New York City's Central Park
3. Royalty
And still no positive or negative associations. For both sets I had to force myself to consciously picture them. That's probably why I thought of colours for the first ones. It would probably be better to mix the sets up a bit so that people don't catch on and start making assumptions.
