Silver Crusade

I got a hypothesis, but it needs more data.

What's the first thing that comes to mind when you see these words? Do they bring up positive or negative feelings?

Spoiler:

1. Clown.

2. Mime.

3. Jester.

And now to mix it up.

Spoiler:

4. Female Clown.

5. Female Mime.

6. Female Jester.

Liberty's Edge

Pretty much negative across the board. I find all either creepy or annoying. Even with

Spoiler:
boobs.

Complete indifference on all counts.

Using the word

Spoiler:
female
just seemed
Spoiler:
awkward in the creative writing sense of awkward, not necessarily negative. It's notable that I did picture males when I read the first spoiler. This is of course quite common, as I am a man and it follows theories of mirroring and similarity. And there are more males pictured in those roles, n'est ce pas?

1st:
nothing really

2nd:
Hmm, I like it.

1st:

a. Circus(neutral)
b. Covant Garden (neutral)
c. bells (neutral)

2nd:

a.Harley Quinn (positive)
b.Covant garden (neutral)
c.Bells (neutral)

Spoiler:
negative for all

Spoiler:
initially positive upon reading the adjective, to immediately negative upon reading the noun

Spoiler:
Mild accusatory negativity across the board primarily due to the first word(i.e. "Someone is acting like a clown" as opposed to "Hey, look at that clown!")

Spoiler:
Still mild accusatory negativity. The gender did not mitigate the feelings from the first set.

1st

Spoiler:
Complete Indifference on all counts

2nd

Spoiler:
Highly unusual on all counts, still indifferent. Images of Harley Quinn come to mind, who sometimes annoys me, sometimes amuses me.

1st:

Spoiler:
shudder. Oh, the horror. :(

2nd:
Spoiler:
ugh. creepy. except harley quinn. Still creepy. But also hot. Which creates an odd blend of positive and negative feelings there.

Set One

Spoiler:
1. Kefka (positive)
2. Animaniacs (positive)
3. The Jester from Devil May Cry (negative)

Set Two

Spoiler:
1. Harley Quinn (positive)
2. Animaniacs again (positive)
3. I got stuck on this one and spent a minute or so trying to visualize her. Don't see female jester characters often. Ended up rebounding back to Harley Quinn. (neutral)

Geekiness is apparently the antidote to "clowns are creepy" syndrome. Who knew.

Set 1:
1. Bozo, maybe with a dash of Pennywise. Slightly negative, overall.
2. Uh, a mime. Neutral, really.
3. Harlequins. Tricksters. MSPA, for some reason. Positive, overall.

Set 2:
1. A woman wearing clown makeup. Creepy, probably because you'd have to be slightly to crazy to wear clown magic for fun.
2. Uh, a female mime. I really don't care that much about mimes.
3. Harley Quinn. A crazy woman wearing clown make-up. Attractive, but probably going to stab you. Both positive and negative.

Set one

Spoiler:

Indifferent, I thought along the lines of center of attention/fool.

Set two

Spoiler:

I thought: sexier fool.

Though I blame it on just recently completing Batman Arkham Asylum and their portrayal of Harley Quinn.

Set one:

Spoiler:
I get kind of a sick feeling with "clown." "Mime" immediately conjures up simultaneous images of Doug Jones and my friend Alex (they're both trained mimes). "Jester" makes me think of a certain Batman villain.

Set two:

Spoiler:
"Female clown" makes me think of early 1930s comic strips, for no apparent reason. "Female mime" makes me think of Doug Jones in drag, which is followed by a similar sick feeling to the one elicited by "clown." "Female jester" immediately conjures images of Harley Quinn and Roxy Epoxy.

Clowns usually don't bug me, other than the general annoyance factor. What really gets me are those f~$&ing creepy-ass porcelain dolls.

Mosdef....*shudders*

Silver Crusade

Huh. A number of results skew exactly as expected, but not nearly as uniformly. Had a lark about the familiarity of different breeds of buffoonery and varying places in the uncanny valley leading to a predictable level of acceptance for each.

I'm really surprised by the lack of fear in some cases.

Yep!

Spoiler:
It's part of the reason why I took "Male" out of the first set, to see how often it made a difference.

The Exchange

Spoiler:
Annoying Bugs

Spoiler:
Harley Quinn! Serial Paedophile Executioner

1. Clown.
a)regular clown, scary as a kid now mostly anoying.
b)CirqueDuSoleil, weardly funny.

2. Mime. Get ma a bat!

3. Jester. Necessary for Scarborough fairs and mildly amusing.

Spoiler:

4. Female Clown. Fat ladies at county fairs.

5. Female Mime. Pr0n thoughts.

6. Female Jester. Same as above.

Here we go

1 to 3:

1. Negative
2. Neutral
3. Positive

4 to 6:

4. Negative
5. Neutral
6. Neutral

addendum:

I find the second sample redundant as Clown, Mime, and Jester are gender non-specific.

The fact that it was grammatically redundant annoyed me thus skewed my answers for the second part of the question.

The Exchange RPG Superstar 2009 Top 8

2. Quiet.

3. Chester.

Shadow Lodge

3. Neutral

For the second set:

Spoiler:

2. Negative

3. Neutral

1st group: circus, silence, court

neutral

2nd group: circus silence court
slightly positive.

I am a male heterosexual. I tend to respond positively to female anything.
I'd rather watch female clowns, mimes, and jesters than male ones.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2013 Top 16

Spoiler:

1. IT. negative
2. annoying. negative
3. annoying, but comical. lots of D&D class connotations. neutral I suppose

Spoiler:

1. I dislike clowns but it's kind of hard to hate a female clown. Nothing sexual whatsoever.
2. annoying. negative but probably less so than a male mime. maybe it's because I might punch a male mime if he was annoying enough but I wouldn't ever punch a female mime no matter how annoying she got.
3. kinda hot in a Mardi Gras harlequin kind of way.

I've not seen a more stronger positive response to this type of test.

Wow. Just wow.

Paizo Employee Creative Director

Completely and without variation negative feelings in every case.

Spoiler:
1. Green

2. White
3. Royalty

I guess I think in colours?

And no positive or negative feelings immediately. A second later, though, MIME HATE (meme from a game).

Spoiler:
1. Mikaze - probably to do with seeing your avatar or something
2. New York City's Central Park
3. Royalty

And still no positive or negative associations. For both sets I had to force myself to consciously picture them. That's probably why I thought of colours for the first ones. It would probably be better to mix the sets up a bit so that people don't catch on and start making assumptions.

All I got is this:

Spoiler:
I think women say about 15,000 words a day, whereas men say about.....150, if you count "the" and "and" every time, so a female mime has got to be about damn impossible.....
