As Mahaffy is trying to disarm the trap, a pair of full red lips suddenly appear on the wall and speak a command word, which turns the entire floor of the corridor to mud. Mahaffy gets a Reflex save vs 17 (with a bonus for trap sense) or he starts to sink.
Soon after that the mud starts to harden again, so he'd better get out quick.
You get another 400 xp for this trap.

Mahaffy sinks down to his chest in mud. You have one round to get creative before it hardens again.
I'm sorry that all these traps slow the game down so much. I'm keeping them as written for three reasons. 1) To give the rogue a chance to shine. 2) To give you a bit more xp before things get nasty and 3) They are a lot of fun (at least the guards think so).

If you can get enough aid another rolls to bring Ka'kara's roll up to 20, you can pull Mahaffy out before the mud hardens.
That pony would indeed have come in handy. Not sure if it was a serious suggestion, but good one anyway.
Outside the tower more gold pieces change hands as bets are cashed in.
And Gregori, we can assume that you are just passing by if you like. Then you can jump right in.

In the nick of time you manage to get Mahaffy out of the rapidly hardening mud. Your joy is somewhat muted as you discover yet another door behind this one (as the corridor twists and turns). Fortunately there is a key hanging beside it with a cloth tag attached.
Black Tom
Funny, the door seems to be unlocked, and not trapped either. The key, however, seems to be warded with some sort of magical rune.
Outside, the guards are tense with anticipation. "Is he coming?" someone whispers. "Any minute now." "That's what you think." "He set off all the ones so far." "Yeah, but he's getting smarter." "Oh yeah?" "Let's see what happens."
Black Tom
The strange behavior of the guards has attracted a brooding young man, who watches them pensively. He's fully armored in spite of being inside the relative safety of the citadel. Apparently he's been out demon-hunting.
One of the guards spots him. "Hey there! Are you with this crowd too?" He nods in the direction of the open door into the tower.
Welcome into the game, Gregori.
Black Tom
Mahaffy opens the door and nothing bad happens. That is, excepting that another door comes in sight, and this one is obviously trapped no less than three times: on the knob, the hinges and the frame. Trapspotting makes it obvious even at a glance.
Back in the corridor, you have company.
Ka'kara Furyheart
Ka'kara intent on what Mahaffy is up to doesn't notice the new company until he is almost right behind her. Glancing over her shoulder she does a double take and nudges Roylenna, "Hey, the guards around here getting better looking. Are you thinking what I am thinking Lenna?" This last said with a wink, Mahaffy's peril apparently momentarily completely forgotten.

"Huh? I guess not... what am I thinking?"
Roylenna Brenoien
The halfling casts another concerned glance at the dwarf carefully inspecting the next portal before she gives in, turns to the new arrival, and says, "Hi! I'm Roylenna, but obviously some of my friends call me Lenna. Your armor is different from the other guards. Why is that?"
She looks back up the hallway, "Mahaffy, do you want me to search for auras again?"
Roylenna Brenoien
"Because I'm not a guard? My name is Gregori, and yes I'm here to help."
"Oh!" She elbows the leg of the barbarian woman beside her. "You said he was a guard!"
Turning back to the not-guard, "Gregori, do you know anything about magical traps? We are trying to determine what happened to the mage that lived within these walls and hoping to find clues in her abode, but her magical protections have turned out to be colorful," she does a poor job of hiding a grin at that, "and effective at slowing us down. I fear that we will find a trap that's dangerous and our friend Mahaffy will be hurt." With that last, she gestures at the dwarf examining the next door down the hallway.

The heavily muscled woman shrugs and smiles, "How was I supposed to know? With all that armor he looked like one but I'm sort of glad he's not. I didn't really want to have to throw him through the next trap."
Roylenna Brenoien
"Mahaffy, some of these trips seem fairly playful, but I'm afraid that as we get closer to the inner sanctum, we're going to find something deadly. Perhaps we'd better seek out the wizard's trail elsewhere in the citadel -- maybe we can find an associate who knew of a passphrase or something of the like to get past the traps."
Turning to the new arrival, she says, "Gregori, you say? Were you familiar with the missing mage?"
Artival Brisboir
"I agree with Roylenna. I mean, watching Mahaffy get turned purple is funny and all, but if the wizard has a more devious bent as we get closer in the tower, things could get really bad. And quickly. Let's try a different route," Artival suggests.

"What do you mean?", Lyria asks Artival.
Ka'kara Furyheart
"By different route, I mean let's leave this tower be until we can find out more information about the wizard. Maybe we can find a key bit of information in town that might let us bypass some of these wards."
"Ok, while you go do that I'll go hunting for more of those demons with anyone who wants to come along. They have got to be coming from somewhere and not just appearing out of thin air. Maybe we can track them back to their lair or something."

"I have heard twice now that the demons have been emerging from a drain in the market. I think that would be the place to start. If we do find the creatures, do we have a plan to defeat them? For example, my fire spells did not appear to be particularly effective last time."
