Monsters and Power attack that's not 1 and a half str

A friend has a Eidelon that has four attacks, all of which are at normal strength damage. He uses the three damage per point used on power attack. It says in the description of power attack that you get three damage for each point you use on monster attacks that are the main attack and has one and a half strength damage.

If I have him right, his Eidelon has got normal strength bonuses for damage, not one and a half damage. However, he uses the times three damage for all attacks per point used on power attack.

Is this right? What if the damage is just normal strength damage and not one and a half strength damage. Do you still use the times three power attack per point used, or times two damage? I'm still not clear on this.

Quote:
Benefit: You can choose to take a –1 penalty on all melee attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a +2 bonus on all melee damage rolls. This bonus to damage is increased by half (+50%) if you are making an attack with a two-handed weapon, a one handed weapon using two hands, or a primary natural weapon that adds 1-1/2 times your Strength modifier on damage rolls. This bonus to damage is halved (–50%) if you are making an attack with an off-hand weapon or secondary natural weapon. When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and every 4 points thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the bonus to damage increases by +2. You must choose to use this feat before making an attack roll, and its effects last until your next turn. The bonus damage does not apply to touch attacks or effects that do not deal hit point damage.

The bolded section specifies the only instances where you get the -1/+3 version of power attack. If, as you say, this eidolon's natural attack only get strength to damage and not strength*1.5, then it would be stuck with the -1/+2 ratio.

That is what I thought, but it would be hard to teach someone this rule? It doesn't mention that it is used for monsters with strength damage unmodified. I suppose it is found in the first sentence that you use -1 for 2 if the strength is at a strait up number. I sense a big argument coming my way when I confront the violator. I am at a loss as to what to say.

The default rule is the first line. By (a rather simple) process of elimination you can determine what to do when the attack does normal strength modifier damage.

The rule gives three possible outcomes:
1) The default -1 attack per +2 damage
2) If the attack is a primary natural attack that does 1-1/2 times str the damage bonus is increased by half.
(or if using both hands, but that isn't at issue)
3) If the attack is with a secondary natural weapon (or offhand) you do do only 50% extra damage.

He does not meet the requirements to be in box 2 or in box 3. Thus the default rule applies.

I Propose you purchase yourself a swanky new T-shirt and then refer to it when you mention it ;)

1. If the Eidolon has more than just *one* natural attack (not type of, but total) then he doesn't get to add 1.5 STR on the damage. If you check out other monsters with multiple attacks of a single type, you'll find this is a constant. So the Eidolon with 4 attacks should only be adding 1 times Str on each.

2. Power Attack gives you triple times the subtracted number to damage if it's with an attack that would give 1.5x damage. As we've established with Step 1, it is not. Therefore he should only be getting double his subtracted number to damage, as stated in the very first sentence of the Power Attack feat. Only if you meet the other requirements in its description would you go above or below that first sentence.

I appreciate all your posts on the matter. I love the idea of getting a shirt with this subject on it. I've posted it on the home city website, we'll see if it gets through some skulls.
