High fantasy + fast xp progression = phat loot?

Rules Questions

I want to start a new campaign for my players with the fast xp progression and the high fantasy rules. However this kinda gives a small problem.
RAW, NPC's will get acces to really good equipment this way. (You have to add 1 to their level to figure out the value of their stuff, and then you have to double that.) This means that a level 2 rogue has 3300gp worth of equipment.

Is this right?

No, you're looking at the PC table. The NPC table is here. A level 2 rogue has 390 gp of gear.

Actually that is for a basic NPC. (a NPC who only has levels in a NPC-class, lower ability scores, and less gear)
A rogue would be a heroic NPC.
Now go ahead and read the paragraph directly above the NPC gear-table, than read my first post again.

That looks correct, although you may want to break down the items differently for some foes. More limited use perhaps, tangle foot bags and such. Potions and Scrolls would not be a miss either I think if the rogue is ranged and UMD focused.

One point in those rogues favor is increased chances to hit because of the magical weapons. If you don't want to completely trick out armor, try adding Glamered, or Shadow, or both. It is High Fantasy after all :).

NPCs, regardless of having NPC classes or PC classes, use the NPC table. Actually, if you fit out an NPC with PC wealth, you should up his CR somewhat.

Liberty's Edge

Isn't it your prerogative to decrease the amount of loot that your NPCs have? You are going to be the DM, after all. If you're doing fast progression, yeah they're going to need some extra gear/duckets to keep ahead of he curve, but you have to control the money as well as the xp progression.

you are now 2cp richer!

Yeah, he's talking about the NPC table - there's just two bonuses for using fast progression and a "high fantasy" campaign.

If you think that's too much loot, then you're not wanting to play a high fantasy game :)

However, this is only really distinct at the very low end of the table, where wealth is going up very rapidly by level.

Actually, it does explain in the Core Rulebook that outfitting a NPC with Player Character Wealth/Items/Gear ups his CR by 1. I believe its under the chapter that explains Player Character wealth, not under the NPC section. (Its included in the text that explains PC wealth).

It also mentions that this would be a 'significant drain' on the allocated treasure any given adventure should provide for the characters, given that most Pathfinder adventures should have some sort of treasure cap.

I'm gonna try to explain my problem one more time, hopefully this will clear things up a bit.
I want to DM a high fantasy campaign. Throughout the CRB the term high fantasy is mentioned, though it would have been better if this was all printed on one page, the designers decided to spread this useful info over the entire book. So here's a short summary of the high fantasy optional rules:

- High fantasy pointbuy (20 points)
- Double the treasure for PCs
- Gear value x2 for NPCs
- Higher (doubled) shopping limits

This means that the PCs will have higher ability scores and better equipment, while the NPCs just have better equipment.

Fast xp progression gives you the following optional rules:

- Less xp needed to reach the next level
- More treasure per encounter so the players don't fall behind in treasure
- More gear for NPCs because the players need more treasure per encounter

Ofcourse, the last one is false logic. It means the NPCs get stronger because you want the players to advance faster. I'm gonna forget about that rule in my campaign.

Now a level 2 rogue (Heroic NPC) still gets 2x780gp=1560gp. Am I right? Maybe I'll just use the Heroic NPC gear for the boss battles and recurring characters. The Basic NPC gear would still be 780gp though.

Sovereign Court

Why are you so worried about the NPC's being stronger? They'll need to be in order to challenge your super powered PC's at all. If you have Super-PC's you need super Villains.
