Recruiting for New Legacy of Fire PBP!

Gamer Connection

So, according to my thorough and exhaustive research ;) it seems that there is a good bit of enthusiasm for playing in a PBP campaign based on one of the older Adventure Paths. With that in mind, I am recruiting 5 or 6 players for a Legacy of Fire campaign, as it was the leading vote-getter in my inquiry thread. Interested? Read on.

Please note that I intend this game to move forward at a fairly brisk pace. I expect players to be able to post at least one time each weekday, and if needed, one time each weekend (even if only for a die roll to keep a combat flowing, for example). I realize that exceptions will come up (illness, vacation, family emergency, etc.) but please only apply if you can generally commit to the pace described here.

This game will not be a first-come first-served campaign, but instead will require a character concept submission. Please e-mail the following information to me at nrfc49 (at) yahoo (dot) com. The reason I'm taking the submission process off board is that I want you to submit the character you really want to play, not just "Hey, nobody submitted a rogue yet, I'll make one of those to increase my chances!" In order to preserve my own objectivity, I also ask that you don't include your Paizo messageboard name in the e-mail. So it works both ways.

All right, here's what I need from you if you want to be considered to play:

Paragraph #1: Basic nuts and bolts about your proposed character. Include: Name, Class, Race, Alignment, Deity Worshipped (if any). If desired, you may suggest important skills, likely weapons or spells, or desired feats. You may also project possible future level advancement, if multi-classing will be desired (just ideas, nothing set in stone).

Paragraph #2: Your character's physical description. Tell me about height, weight, and build; eye, skin, and hair color. What kinds of clothing does she wear (color, style, quality?). What weapons and other trappings of his class does he carry? What about tattoos, scars, birthmarks, facial hair? The more detail you can pack into a paragraph, the better I (and your fellow players) will be able to create a visual picture of your character.

Paragraph #3: Tell me about your character's personality. Is he/she heroic? Suspicious? A drunkard? Gregarious? Orphaned? Hates gnolls? Lusty? A loner? Let me know all that you can about your character's persona and motivations here, in a succinct fashion.

Paragraph #4: Background. The adventurers begin as part of a caravan through the wilds of Katapesh, with the PCs having joined together under the employ of a man named Garavel. Garavel has gathered this group as the major domo of Almah Roveshki, a merchant princess who seeks to reestablish control of the remote town of Kelmarane in northwestern Katapesh. Kelmarane formerly held the southern end of a trade route between Osirion and Katapesh, but it is now reputed to be under the control of a savage tribe of gnolls. In this paragraph, please explain how your character came to be in Katapesh (whether a Katapehsi native, or an outsider), how he/she came to the attention of Garavel, what he/she was doing before this undertaking, and why he/she would agree to take on employment in this potentially dangerous venture. If you have access to the Legacy of Fire Player's Guide, it will be a great resource in helping you create these details (especially by examining the Campaign Traits). If you don't have that book, don't worry. Do the best you can based on what you know. If you want to fill in specific details, but lack information, I can certainly help. Just ask!

Character Creation Info: I DO NOT want a completed character sheet right now, just the four paragraphs detailed above. If you want to make a sheet (or already have one made), that's fine, but I don't want to see it yet. However, I do know that these details may be influential in creating concepts, so I will provide them. In a nutshell: PFRPG rules, 1st Level PCs, No evil alignments, 20 point buy for ability scores, average starting gold per class, 2 traits (each from different categories), max hit points for 1st level, no APG playtest classes. If there's anything else you wish to know that will impact your character concept, feel free to ask.

The deadline for consideration is Sunday February 21st. That's four days, so take your time. I'm going to choose the characters that I think are the most well-developed, the most complete, the most interesting, and the most appropriate for the campaign. If I can be of any assistance to you throughout the process, feel free to let me know.

I realize that I'm asking kind of a lot for the opportunity to possibly play in a PbP game. In return, all I can say is that I plan to run a game that will be immersive, active, challenging, and great fun for all involved. I hope you'll consider giving it a shot.

Thanks, and good luck!

Good times, I've received my first character submission!

The applicant raised a good point in his e-mail, and I thought I'd reply publicly for the benefit of all.

I do realize that in running a pbp on these boards, it becomes difficult to find potential players who are completely unfamiliar with the adventures in question. Please be aware that I understand this, and simply expect players to work at keeping player knowledge separate from character knowledge. It's not a barrier to being accepted as a player. I trust that everyone knows the game is just more fun when people aren't taking active steps to spoil things.

Anyhow...one submission. Who's next? :)

Come on in, the water is fine!

In response to another question raised by a potential player:

If your e-mail address contains your Paizo message board handle (or some other clearly identifying information), don't worry too much about it. I'm planning to print the character concepts without e-mail addresses before thoroughly reviewing them. Just make sure said messageboard name is not in the body of the e-mail, please. Thanks!

Another issue raised by a prospective player:

Your experience in PbP gaming (or lack thereof) is a non-issue in being selected (or not) to participate in this game. Everybody has to start somewhere, after all. :)

So come on, rookies, if you've got a great character concept for this campaign, I'd love to see it! (Of course, that goes for the vets as well!)

Some good character concepts are coming in...keep 'em coming, folks!

You should have my concept, just wondering when and how you were going to let us know what characters got selected for the game?

I do indeed have it, thank you!

To everyone: I think I've responded to all applicants via e-mail. But, just in case I missed someone, please know that I'll close the application process on Sunday evening, and then get to the serious business of making the cuts. Honestly, it will probably be Monday when I announce the players.

Cry Havoc, I just sent you my application (again) from a different email(both are gmail). Just wanted to make sure you got it, as I did not receive a reply like you mentioned earlier. Sorry for cluttering your inbox! :D

E-mail received, and reply sent!

I'm glad you resubmitted, because I did not receive the first one.

Concept sent. Good luck to all.

Set, have you received a reply e-mail from me? If not, I did not get your concept.

I'll be closing the opportunity to send in character submissions tonight, so if you are procrastinating or sitting on the fence, best not wait too much longer!

Ooh, I've been swithering as I've just put my application in for another game, but I'll ask anyway...

Planning on running it 'straight up' or modifying it to suit the eventual party? I ask because, while I know nothing about this AP, my experience with another Pathfinder AP (the first 2 parts of RotRL) was not great to be honest. Our party of 4 - which was by no means grossly ineffectual - were TPKed (although the GM rolled it back) twice, my PC was killed by an NPC who you couldn't have built better to take him out if I'd mailed in my stats to Paizo beforehand, and we horribly fudged at least 2 combats that I know of to save us getting our butts handed to us again. Frankly, it seemed like only optimised PCs in the hands of proficient players had any chance at all.

I have a possible concept for this but he's 3 parts flavour to 1 part crunch, and while I understand you can't make allowances for seriously sub-par PCs (and I am certainly not going out of my way to make him useless!), I'm looking for story and interaction, and not having my character snuffed out without so much as a backward glance.

grufflehead,

In terms of the plot, I hope to stick to the AP as closely as possible. That doesn't mean a hard railroad job (I can make some modifications as needed), but it does mean that if the party wants to abandon the AP altogether, I don't see myself having the time to whip up an adventure of my own.

As for the risk of TPK, well...I suppose it could happen. But frankly, I'm not one of those DMs who feels that it's my job to kill the PCs as nastily as possible at every opportunity. Indeed, I'm just as likely to fudge things in the players' favor if a TPK seems imminent; especially if the characters in qustion are role-played entertainingly, and well...I like them. :) Ultimately, I'd prefer to tell a good story rather than follow every rule to a tee.

Also, bear in mind that PFRPG characters will likely be a bit more powerful than their 3.5 counterparts, and that I am likely to accept 6 players. That should help improve the party's chances too.

I hope that helps you make your decision!

Thanks for the reply - that was the reassurance I needed. I think our GM in RotRL was as surprised as us that we get getting beaten up ;) But having extra bodies on the ground (as opposed to in it) will definitely be a help.

I'll go ahead and think on an application then.

The Exchange

Speaking from the cheap seats, I'm running this AP on the boards already and the party hasn't come close to a getting into trouble yet. They are almost half way through the first adventure.

I'd be very tempted to have a crack at playing, simply because I like the way you have set this up, but let's just wish you well, since I'm max-ed out and my meta-knowledge may be a bit too strong.

So Good Luck Cry Havoc and unleash.......

Cheers

Thanks for your input, French Wolf! I'm sure I'll be referring to your game often for advice and inspiration.

As a few final concepts trickle in, I thought I'd raise a point or two here on the boards.

First, please know that I have received many more than six very good submissions. Not just adequate, but really well thought out character ideas that show the author has thought about role-playing the details and engaging with the setting. I bring this up just to point out that I will have to make some hard choices. Some people who did a great job on their concepts will still have to be left out. So, if you don't make it into this game, please know that the competition was stiff, and I've got a hard task ahead of me in choosing only six.

Second, I wanted to mention that I'm trying to find the best players I can for my style of game. This doesn't ncessarily mean that I will choose six characters that make a well balanced party. If I feel that the six best concepts are all rogues, so be it. However, once the play group has been assembled, I have no problem with some players making changes to their concepts to help balance the party out. So just keep that in mind.

Wow, this decision is going to be tough...

Just checked, mail got returned. Tried again.

I just sent my concept to your email Cry Havoc. All the best for your game. And to all the other applicants, good gaming!

And with that, the window for submission of a character concept is now closed. Thanks to all of you! Please watch this thread tomorrow for my decisions. Best of luck to you all.

Friends, the wait is over.

Would the creators of the following characters please make your way over into the Discussion Thread:

Aaliyah Abdsaren al-Wazif, Female Human Fighter
Bosch, Male Half-Orc Monk
Eli Wynnstock, Male Human Rogue
Nuveril, Female Halfling Barbarian
Sadid Safwan, Male Human Ranger
Shadrach Sandwalker, Male Human Druid

If your character is not on the list, please do accepts my heartfelt thanks for taking the time to write up so many excellent character concepts. I was sorely tempted to expand the party roster beyond six, but ultimately I decided to stick to my guns so as not to get in over my head. Also, please continue to keep one eye on this thread for a while longer, just in case the need for an alternate should arise.

Best of luck, and good gaming to you all!

Lantern Lodge

darn, i wanted to join. guess my ideas at an adapted aasimmar favored soul of Sarenrae will have to wait. however some of the spells from the spell compendium will be needed. stuff like close wounds, delay death, revenance and revivify.
