Epithets of our Hobby from the Uninitiated

Off-Topic Discussions

It came across me while I was musing; lost in my own thoughts. What are some of the humorous or odd-ball phrases you've heard from those not familiar with our hobby?

Two that I've heard:

Goblins & Indians
Dildos & Dirigibles

I've had folks ask me if we fought with real swords when we played D&D...

or have someone ask "That's played on the computer, right?" when I try to explain what I'm doing all of Saturday afternoon...

Funny; Regular folks just don't get Role-playing. It's light years beyond them. Oh well... Their loss.

My mother asked me one time, "Don't you think you've got enough of those weirdo books.".

The Exchange

My mother asked me if I was doing drugs. I would have loved the weirdo books comment.

Oh, I got that one too.

I guess I was going more toward the direction of 'nicknames' or such for the game.

Liberty's Edge

Back when I was in high school, some of my friends who didn’t game called it ‘the game where you kill people’.

“What are you doing on the weekend? Playing the game where you kill people?”

My three year old son knows that it’s called Dungeons and Dragons, but he thinks any game with dice is called Dungeons and Dragons. Which leads to much hilarity (ok, probably horrified concern) when he tells his carers at day-care that he plays Dungeons and Dragons when really he’s just rolling some big plush dice around.

Was that after the 60 Minutes story - I became almost popular for 3 seconds at school because I was into something "dangerous". People kept asking about ‘the game where you kill people’.

My daughter calls it the scary monster game.

We used to call Rolemaster Rulemonster.

My mom thought it was my involvement in D&D that got me into pagan religions, and was "worried for my soul."

This from a woman that only ever went to church on Easter (maybe, depending on the year), didn't say grace, or really participated in any of the Christian rituals.

The funniest thing though was the look of horror on her face when I explained that D&D had nothing to do with it, just the fact that Christianity made exactly 0 sense to me, and at least the pagan religions based their beliefs, even in an abstract way, on the natural world.

She still doesn't get it, and was confused as to why I didn't want to celebrate Christmas this year.

Lantern Lodge

On monday I got "As long as there are sad lonely men, there will be people playing D&D":P

A year ago, as the Great Edition Flap raged on the Internet, I was talking with a co-worker and casually mentioned that I played D&D. He looked at me strangely and said, "That's still around?"

Helped me put all the tempest and angst surrounding the game in perspective.

I started playing D&D when I was 18 because my new friends in the SCA told me it was a great game. My first comment when they asked me what charecter I wanted to play was, "I want to be the guy with the hat" they howled with laughter, didn't stop laughing for 5minutes.

After I had been playing for about 4 months my mother and father wanted to talk to me about this new game. Mind you my dad wouldn't set foot in a church if you paid him and they talked to me about how they heard about a kid killing his parents because of this game. I took sweet revenge by smiling sweetly and pointing out that they shouldn't believe eveything they hear,I got them to play for an hour and they said "this is it?" Case closed problem solved.

I read many years ago that the typical D&D adventures are "combat & crawl" adventures - this makes for a nice alternative name.

My parents never got it - they just asked if I did not have played enough already many years ago, obviously thinking that playing games equals kids leisure activities, but that this is not a game for "grown men".

I think we've all gotten that one before. the ever famous "oh yea I played that when I was a kid in high school"

I never really got flack for playing the game when I was younger. My mother was more worried about me listening to Ozzy. Nowadays, when I tell people I still listen to metal music, they act like it's something I'm supposed to grow out (or mature) of it. <shakes fist>

Back to the topic - I've also heard 'Dorks & Dice'.

Okay, I know you're my evil twin and all, but this is getting FREAKY. I got the EXACT SAME SPEECH down to the "weird books" phrase. I'm beginning to think if we ever shook hands, there'd be some kind of reality-ending paradox.

Also, there was the one time I got a guy who thought that because I played D&D, I also smoked pot, and asked if I was holdin'.
