Many evolutions, such as rake and pounce are limited to the base quadruped form. Why is that? Why can't I take the serpent form, add a quartet of legs, and then take rake and/or pounce?

I find that other evolutions are similarly limited to base forms (even though I could buy other evolutions that logically should allow them).

Also, many evolutions have a specific limit as to how many times you can take them. How does that work when putting the evolutions onto the summoner?

Say, for example, I can take the Improved Natural Armor evolution 4 times. Can I put it 4 times EACH on the eidolon and the summoner? Or do I have to split the 4 selections BETWEEN the summoner and eidolon?

This is especially important for evolutions that can only be taken once. If I give my eidolon a spell-like ability, does that mean that my summoner can no longer ALSO select that option for himself?

I would love to make a mounted combat summoner who has the water breathing and the swim speed evolutions right along with his eidolon so that they can both go on aquatic adventures together. :)

Yes, please can we get an official response here?

Scarab Sages

I read this as Ravingdork likes watersports with his Eidolon.

Spell-like abilities is no longer an evolution.

You cannot apply logic to Paizo's summoner - it is a class with 100 unreasonable micro-nerfs. For example, why can't you add an extra pair of legs to a biped (making it a quadruped) and then have it serve as a mount? Don't try to make logical sense of stuff like that, just use the RAW and realize they dropped the ball on the summoner in their rush to get it balanced (which they DID do a good job on, albeit with tons of nonsense).

Don't worry about Improved Natural Armor on your summoner since chain or mithral shirts are better.

The reason you can't use pounce on a Biped is because it is already significantly stronger than a quadruped and pounce would make it totally overpowered. Pounce balances the slightly weaker base form.

I have to agree with you here.

They've piled so many exceptions and special rules on this class that you don't know what standard rules DO apply!

if it was not for the limitations I suspect alotmfewer people would use anything but the bipedal. if you coi,d add pounce to it it would be that much stronger and it already seems to be the optimizers choice.

I assumed that you paid for all of the evolutions as if they were going on your eidolon thenmovdd the ones you wanted to the summoner. but I do see the benefits of being able to join your sharkogatorous Rex eidolon in the water.

I really don't see buying water breathing for your summoner as that unbalancing. but doing this with say breath weapon on sloth the summoner and the eidolon could be pretty strong.
