My plan for a playtest tonight

Advanced Player's Guide Playtest: Final Playtest

Silver Crusade

I'm planning on running an NPC Playtest tonight as part of my regular campaign. The party consists of a lvl 6 Wizard, Fighter, Cleric (possibly with one level of Oracle, not sure atm) and a Paladin. Normally there is a Cavalier in it too, but I think he's changing characters since he's not having fun with the Cavalier, (I like it, but hey, his opinion is his opinion).

Anywho, I'm planning on pitting them against a lvl 9 Summoner and a lvl 9 Inquisitor, both with the Fiendish template too (just for storyline relation)

The Summoner's Eidolon is going to have Tactical feats as well as a few regular feats that are beneficial.

What do you guys think? Seems like it could be Challenging for them? Should I bump it up a bit?

Sounds fine to me.

Perhaps I am confused. Are you putting a 6th level party (APL 6) against a CR 11 encounter? That is assuming you are building out the Fiendish Summoner and Inquisitor as CR +0. They could be going against a CR of 12 if they are the +1 CR version.

That is a CR of APL +5 (or +6) that is beyond and Epic difficulty as an
encounter.

I am referring to page 397 of the Core Rulebook and pg 294 of the Bestiary for the CRs and APls. Perhaps I am wrong but that seems sure to kill everyone. It is a playtest so I guess nothing that happens actually carries over to the ongoing characters...

Yeah that does seem a bit excessive to me.

A standard class is CR -1, Fiendish is CR +1 (because they are over 5HD). Two creatures is CR +2 so.... CR 11

There shall be blood.

A level 6 fiendish inquisitor and level 6 fiendish summoner would be a CR 8. Or a considerable challenge for the party.

Thanks, I'll work with that then.

Actually, CR8 would be a challenge they're expected to pass without too much difficulty. If you want a really tough fight, one that's (theoretically) going to push the group to the limits, aim for an Encounter Level of Average Party Level +4. In this case, that'd be EL 10, which deconstructs to a CR 10 foe, 2 CR 8 foes, or 4 CR 6 foes.

Keep in mind when and where you're going to use the encounter, too. If it's going to be a "random" traveling encounter, it's likely that your party will blow a significant chunk of their daily resources on it, because parties rarely encounter more than maybe 2-3 "traveling" encounters, which will make it much less lethal. On the other hand, if they're at the end of a long, drawn-out dungeon, your party may be almost completely tapped by the time they stumble on this encounter, which will make it much more lethal.

Just some tips.
