[Battlefield Press] Cinematic Adventures (Modern) Ready for Playtest

Product Discussion

Wayfinders

The product we announced last summer is finally ready for playtest. It is a closed playtest, but we are not going to turn away anyone that signs the NDA. The nda can be found at www.battlefieldpress.com/bpinda.html

We are looking forward to your input. As only the fans can make this a project worth publishing.

Hey, I'm David Schwartz, lead author of BPI's Cinematic Adventures. Jon is man of few words, so I thought I'd fill you in with...

Five Things to Know About BPI's Cinematic Adventures.

1. Cinematic Adventures is completely compatible with the Pathfinder RPG. We haven't just slapped new grapple rules on a previous Modern system. You'll be able to mix-and-match fantasy and Modern elements without translation.

2. This is not a universal system. It is design to replicate the ensemble action-adventures stories of popular media. Such stories just happen not to be tied to any specific time or place.

3. This is not grim-and-gritty. The game is not set in the real world, but the reality of the action-adventure stories. The characters in such stories regularly defy gravity, survive mortal wounds, and make fireballs using only sulfur and bat guano, and never once do they blame a wizard.

4. On the other hand, characters do not start out as heroes. First level characters are little better than those around them, though some X-factor marks them for greater things. Only through group adventures and their own personal journey do the characters rise above the everyday.

5. Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. Just as divine and arcane magic are transparent, so is high-tech and fringe science to the existing magic rules. If it can be done with magic mechanically, then it's treated as magic, even if we don't call it that.

I'm trying to understand your reasons for going with a closed beta. Pathfinder was open beta. Just seems like you're going against the grain. Since everything is based on the OGL and the SRDs in general what's your primary reason(s) for going closed? Have you completely abandoned the Modern SRD for this project? Just wondering is all.

NDAs are not incredibly conducive to generating positive hype regarding an upcoming project.

While guess this will be part if the NDA, but how does your system interact with supplemental d20 Modern material such as Green Ronins Modern Player's Guide or Future Player's Guide.

While it sounds like you've put a lot of work into it already one of the atractions of Pathfinder was how well it 'just works' with older 3.5 material (mainly adventures). In my experiance running bits of Urban Arcana, d20 Future, Starwars Revised, and 3.5 D&D it all basically just worked for the most part. Granted I never had a 20th level Wizard pair up with a 10 Fast/10 Smart Hero... but at that point you really are stepping outside the norm for any type of typical period setting and need something more targeted to that style of play...

Which almost sounds like what your looking to offer from your description.

+1.

Hi.

A quick look around the battlefield press website didn't provide much information regarding BPI's Cinematic Adventures. I'd love to know more about it.

There's a few venues I could join to test a new system (local meet-up groups, a local games club, etc) and I have a 1/2 dozen or so rough adventures set in my own home-brew Modern setting. The first (run last year at a local gaming convention) ended up being fairly rules light as no one at the table knew pathfinder; but it was to be the start of a long-running set of adventures set in New York circa 1930. I'd be interested to see how BPI's Cinematic Adventures changes the that adventure.

If I can help - feel free to contact me (ketherian -at- gmail dot com).

I am interesting in playtesting your Modern rules. I have worked under NDA before and I can produce at least three players for purposes of game play. I'm a fan of the cinematic modern games this ruleset seeks to promote and I'd like to do anything possible to make it happen.

I have over twenty years of gaming experience to bring to the table and at least one of my players can say the same. Email me at cryiron at gmail.com if interested.

Interested and email sent.

[note: I've changed references to "Pathfinder Modern" to the publisher's new working title "Cinematic Adventures," as the name "Pathfinder Modern" is not compliant with the Pathfinder RPG Compatibility License.]

David
do you have any news on this?

After much deliberation, we have decided to redo the manuscript and resubmit it to playtesters sometime in the first half of 2011. Thanks for your patience in this matter.
