Let's just say I'm pushing it. :) OpenOffice disagrees with the website word count, and a while ago I remember hearing that the official count was done with MS Word (which I don't have). That was before the online word count was added. Can I trust that number, or should I leave myself some leeway?
Handy advice: if you're at a point where your word count is so close to the limit that its OVER word count in some programs... you should probably go ahead and trim a dozen words or so.

Lief,
I use both OpenOffice and MS Word (on two separate computers) and when checking word count on various things I've written, I've noticed that OpenOffice seems to count more words than MS Word. So, if you hit 700 words on the dot in OpenOffice, that probably means you're under that with MS Word. Also, for the record, I actually prefer using OpenOffice over MS Word for exactly that reason. It tricks me into thinking I've used up more words than I have. And, OpenOffice handles Paizo's styles better than MS Word.
But that's just my two-cents,

Yeah, OpenOffice was 4 words over the site's count for my entry, and when I counted words on one of the items in the Clark-feedback thread, someone else replied saying that Word had given them a lower count. Not yet sure what it's counting differently, but I agree it's a good extra buffer!
Hyphenated words are counted as 2 in OO and 1 in MSW.

It probably handles some of the individual dashes and abbreviations in the stat-block differently as well. I think that's usually where my word counts get "off" between OpenOffice and MS Word...as well as general hyphenated words throughout the text.

Also numbers with commas in, I think. I wonder if over-hyphenation killed my entry then - I think the difference for me was something like 30 words!
