Want to play in a PBP (that doesn't die before the end)

Preferably using PFRPG rules, but I'm pretty easy to please. I have AD&D 2, 3.0 and PFRPG....

Please? Any gaps going free?

So, are you offering to start a game, or asking to join one?

Good luck with that. It is my understanding that at least half PbP games die before they get off the ground.

Some do, some don’t. My Age of Darkness game is the longest running (by a few hours) pbp still active on the site, since April 2007, at above 5000 posts.

Aubrey’s Eberron Campaign is the second longest running still active game here (although it may soon end in a TPK…), with a post count topping 9000.

Heathy’s Saltmarsh / Isle of Dread game hasn’t been running for as long but is up to something like 13000 posts and still going strong (Gary had to split the game off into another thread some time after the post count topped 9000, as it was breaking the site).

But you’re somewhat right CourtFool, a lot of games do die before they start, or relatively soon after.

Nevynxxx, if you’re specifically looking for a game that has longevity, you may be better off trying to join an already well established game rather than take a risk on a new one. I’m not aware of any that are currently looking for openings, but every few weeks to couple of months you’ll see a post in this section with someone looking for an additional player for an established game.

Yep, there should be six or seven openings in my Eberron game coming up soon.

The main reason that these games fail is that they are quite hard work to run. My other Eberron game (as Nevyn will know) basically folded because I thought I could run three PbPs at once and discovered that I couldn't. It is probably worthwhile checking out who is asking to run these games and see if they are a reasonably well-know name with form for running a decent game with stamina. I think a lot of DMs go into this without realising how much time they take up, and other commitments then intervene. To be frank, the best way to guarantee a game might be to run one yourself, since it is basically up to you as to whether it will go on or not.

That said, I know you are reliable. Would you fancy in to my Runelords game (assuming the others are cool with it)?

I am aware there are some very long running campaigns. It just seems for every long running one (you mentioned, what, four?) there are half a dozen that do not make it out of the gate. I guess I am just jaded.

Truth be told, I should not be. I am in three PbP games on The Atomic Think Tank. Of course I think I applied to six and tried to run one…so…yeah…hitting about 50%.

Oh, man, you are lucky. Aubrey is probably the most determined GM here. I used to follow one of his games, but unfortunately RL intervened and when I got back, I'd forgotten so much I had to read it over again. By then, it was seriously long, so I gave up. I think I'll try again soon...

I learned this after DMing my first pbp on a proboards forum I created. I gave a little more freedom to do stuff with maps and pictures. It lasted about 2.5 years but I was mentally exhausted by the end. I can understand why so many fail before they get going.

Big solid "yes" of agreement on the quite hard work to run thing. I'm running three 4e games at the moment and was briefly holding down four (briefly because there was some overlap between one finishing and the next starting rather than because I packed it in).

I'm lucky in my players though. The 4e pool is quite small and they're all keen, so I don't have to do that much nudging along. Speaking of which, I have no openings at the moment, but if you're interested in testing 4e, I'd be happy to add you to the alternates list.

No problem here. And if Nevynxxx feels like playing a rogue or ranger, it means Elisile can get back to being a mage for a while!

Liberty's Edge

While most PbPs fail because the GM runs out of steam, it's vitally important to have reliable players as well. If the group begins crumbling from lack of posting from several members, it gets harder and harder to maintain the narrative flow with whoever is left, and for most games there is a critical threshold, below which it's difficult or impossible to keep the game together in any real sense.

Yes, a rogue would be ideal. :)

When will you start taking new players? I'd like to join if there's a open spot.

Well, I'm sort of holding it open for Nevynxxx, since this is his thread. If he doesn't fancy it, we can see if anyone else does.

Liberty's Edge

I'm all ferr it.

Liberty's Edge

I think it's a balance between cranking the homework and driving the game/keeping everybody engaged. It looks to me like many pbp's fail right out of the gates; the dm says, "OMGWTF did I get myself into" and it croaks. THEN, half the players kinda skeedaddle, and you're waiting a week for somebody to do a saving throw. Then everybody says "to hell with this, man."

Liberty's Edge

I like to try to stay 2 encounter builds ahead of the action, but it's hard sometimes.....

I was thinking Eberron, but if there's opening in some other game, I'm interested in tat as well.

Ohhh, yes yes yes!

A rouge would be fun, too, never played one of those before... I shall dig out the Runelords threads and get caught up... I used to follow that one religiously...

As to the comments above, yes, most games don't get off to a good start, but I've been involved in three now that have gone over a year before petering out. That is where my disappointment comes in, so much time building characters and relationships gone....

Of course, one of those was one I was running, so I know all the reaosns why it happens. ;)

p.s. Yes, I managed to totally forget I started this thread. Damn forums that don't mail you when your threads get replied to...I am more reliable than this, honest!

Ah, so my Runelords game isn't good enough for you? :-) I'll put you on the list for that one, but I'm afraid you aren't first.

OK, cool. Why not go to the discussion thread? Posting rate has slowed dramatically since the old days (though picked up a bit recently) so hopefully there won't be too much to catch up on.

Oh, and it's rOGUe. If Fakey ever rejoins that game he would have words.

Hey, hook a guy in Iraq up! Anybody got openings? I have books, and a crappy dice roller on my laptop. I'm willing to play any of the core classes, but would prefer a wizard.

Every game I have been in died for one reason or another, sad as I love playing; that is why I am running two games now; one is very long running over 5k in posts, the other is not yet to 1k; but almost; am starting a sci fi one now; you can look by my track record that my games dont die for which I am grateful to all the players.
