New Classes and Magic Item Creation

Advanced Player's Guide Playtest General Discussion

Quick question - will the new spellcasting classes have a higher magic item creation cost for items such as potions, scrolls, and wands? As they all top out at 6th level spells, they get access to some spells much earlier than wizards and clerics. Can we assume they will all be using the Bard entries on the magic item cost tables? (see PFRPG Core Pg 478, Table 15-12 for an example).

Apologies if this issue has already been addressed in the playtest.

The oracle and the witch are staring at you in confusion, pondering whether they should punish you with their 9th-level magic for your oversight...

The way I see it, a witch will use the entry for wizards (et al), the oracle that for the sorcerer, and the summoner and inquisitor will indeed be using the bardic list.

Note that the bard also gets access to some magic earlier than the rest, so his scrolls of that stuff would cost less.

While it might seem like some spells got really cheap for wizards now (buy a summon monster IX scroll for the price of a VI scroll and so on), always remember that the GM is the final arbiter of item availability, and that he can (and should) take into consideration the fact that some classes (like inquisitors and summoners) are a lot more rare than wizards and the like, and that they probably tend to not sit in a lab churning out magic items for PCs to get a bargain...

Since the Witch have been around since 1st Edition, I would hardly categorize the class as a "new spellcasting class". Same goes for the Oracle, which is simply the Favored Soul done lightyears better. :-)

Still, I think you are on the right track on which classes will end up in which category of base magic item cost. If it doesn't end up that way, I may have to houserule it. I have a player salivating over the thought of making a cheap Monster Summoning IX item. Any "advantage", I suppose.

Thanks for reading, and do not taunt happy fun ball.

The class is brand new, though. I don't think any of the older witches were like that. Plus, it has been ages since we had an "official" witch, so I call this one new.

The only thing they have in common is that they are divine casters that cast cleric spells without preparation. The similarities end there.

It's like saying the "witch is basically a wizard, just with (insert witch stuff here)"

So your feeble excuses are denied. I wouldn't wonder if your cattle stopped giving milk and died on the field, if your crop withered, and your manhould would shrivel up and become a useless husk (standard witch curse, or so I've been told.) ;-P

Tell him he'll have to play a summoner for that. Because the magic item creation business is unionised, and summoners are allowed to charge the same for their Summon IX scrolls than everybody else ;-)).
