Should LPJ Design buy the rights for the Razor Coast setting from Sinister Adventure and release it?

Product Discussion

I started this on my blog, but I thought it made more sense to put it here:

Before we answer the question that was asked with the title of this post, I must say that I have a large amount of respect for Nick Logue, Sinister Adventure and what his plans are with Razor Coast. I can’t wait to see what he has planned.

Now since all the niceties are over, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. Razor Coast sounded like a great idea from the start. I liked everything that Nick had planned to do with this setting he was developing. It was going o be great to see what Nick had planned. So I waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. And waited some more. But after waiting a year I think Nick might be underwater with this project. There are a lot of reasons why this might of happened but it doesn’t matter. What matters is how can this incredible project get on the market? So we go back to the title of this post: Should LPJ Design buy the rights for the Razor Coast setting from Sinister Adventure and release it?

While I don’t think Nick will actually sell LPJ Design the rights to do Razor Coast, (If you are interested Nick send me an email) I would like to do whatever I can to help this project move along. Just let me know what I can personally do to help get this project back on track and out to the fans of your work (Which does include me.) Hope to hear from you soon.

The reason I never pre-ordered Razor Coast was the sporadic updating of Sinister Adventures' website. If there's any way Razor Coast could get a proper release then I'd buy it in a minute.

I love pirates!

All I want is this project to come out. I just want to know how customer and even publishers can help.

Not sure if Nick is going to relinquish the project, but you have pretty much hit the nail on the head why I haven't bothered to pre-order it. I would have been a bit incensed that someone had my money tied up and there's nothing to show for it.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32

We (Pre-orderers) all got a preview .pdf e-mailed to us a month or so ago which, while not fully edited, seemed to me like it was at least a decent way towards being complete. Nick's last update was that he was waiting on some art/map orders to come through and then it was just down to a final edit and for layout to be completed.
That still seems like it will be a bit before it is completed but at least I do now have some hope that it is just around the corner.

I'm not too worried about the money side of it as I bought it with some PayPal money I had left over from selling a WoW TCG Loot Card (people will pay anything for some things) and I never technically had it to begin with...

Personally I am more interested in Ebon Shroud, but given the setbacks on Razor Coast I'm not confident we'll see either this or the Future stuff (Cold Black/Known Universe Gazeteer) any time before 2011 which is a shame because like you I am a fan of Nick's work and want to give him my money (what little of it I have to spare).

Just reminded me -- it is the future stuff that I was really more interested in seeing its release, but the issues circling Razor Coast made me think twice. I'm just a gamer that wants to get use out of his dollars he's throwing out. :)

Sorry, you just fell victim to my utter hate of the use of "could of" (or "might of" in this case) as a valid spelling of "could have"/"could've", which apparently is something only native speakers do.

Sure, I might buy the book if it looks good...but I sure hope there are no "could ofs" in the final product...;)

What about the other 3 products that I've already paid for?

Lou is a phenomenal guy - I wish Nick would let Lou take his evidently already written material to a publisher that will publish it... See THIS thread for example.

Poor grammar, as in this example, always costs a product a couple of stars when I'm writing a review. It makes the text jarring to read. 'Fell Beasts' suffered terribly from this, and other editing problems.

You're the one that comes first to mind when I can sense the frustration of investing your money and not seeing a published result. Hopefully someone steps up to the plate so that you can get your gaming dollars' worth.

oh man...I hope I don't come across as overly irrational. I don't mind paying for something and not getting it nearly as bad as wanting something and not getting it. I'm rooting for Nick...

You don't come across as irrational at all. All I have to think is how much money you've plunked down, how long you've been waiting, and the infrequent updates (and questionings on statuses) and the amount of time that the website has been down/unavailable. It sends concerns.

Louis, on the other hand, can't keep quiet and shows up everywhere like a whack-a-mole. :P (and I mean that in a nice way, LPJ)

Well if Nick is interested in becoming partners and that helps his products get done sooner then great. Not sure he would be but wouldn't hurt to ask him.

I like Nicks work and I preordered Razor Coast, but I will be honest. I won't preorder from Sinister Adv again least until he proves he can get the products out in a timely manner. I will buy stuff from him if and when they come out but no more preorders.

I seriously doubt Nick would sell the rights, I think your best bet would honestly be to contact him and offer to partner with him. Help him out in the area he seems to be struggling with. I think he is a great writer but I think he got in way over his head on the editing, drafting, layout etc part of things. So that is something he could be interested in maybe.

I'm, personally, having a hard time keeping track of all the pies you have a finger in already, so I'd vote no, but I'm not really familiar with this setting. To be brutally honest, I just don't have the interest to get familiar with a setting unless a quick summary can show me its something eye-gougingly amazing or fun.

I am a fan of Nick and Sinister Adventures, anything Rite Publishing could do to help, I am happy to try.

As much as I want to see Sinister's setting and adventures in the light of day(? - seems the wrong word), I wouldn't want to see them appropriated by someone else. From everything I've seen in previews, both on the website and sent to preorders, the production value is really high and it captures the twisted design elements that Logue is so famous for. Even if it takes another year to come out, I like knowing that it's Nick's baby and that he's going to do it right, whenever it gets done. Despite delays on everything thus far, I was tempted just the other day to pre-order Ebon Shroud as well, but I'll hold off on that one.

Hm, I was a little... upset, too, but since Nick apologized how he underestimated the whole business of being a publisher in his forums, I'll just wait and be happy when it finally arrives.

+1 from the one who also pre-ordered Ebon Shroud & Cold Black

Hi Everyone!

Sorry for being swallowed up for a week! My day job exploded last week in a HUGE way, but I think I finally fixed everything, and am able to settle into some Sinister work again now.

First and foremost: Apologies to all you very patient and lovely Sinister fans. I know we've had enough trauma-drama with Sinister to flesh out ten full seasons of a bad t.v. show and my lack of publishing acumen along with enough life changes to confuse even me, has slowed the release of our big projects by AGES.

That said, RC is looking good for release very soon. My magic statblock checkers are hard at work making sure my math doesn't suck too much (it does believe me), and I am already working on the Pathfinder conversion of RC from the OGL it was originally written for.

We are waiting on a couple of maps that I needed to make changes too, but beyond that we are closing up on the finish line.

Hope that update helps.

LPJ: Thanks for the offer! I love your work and have no doubt you would do RC justice - however, for a bundle of reasons I can't hand it off. I appreciate the offer of help though, and I'll definitely email you if I think of a way you can help me get this puppy out the door faster. Mostly it comes down to me being tied up too often with my day job - which is ridiculously busy, if fun, and not realizing all the staggering challenges of putting out a book of the size and quality of RC. One reason its taking so long is that I want to make sure I do it RIGHT, and don't let my fans down. This is taking much longer than I expected, but I can't let expediency take one jot of awesomeness from RC.

Thanks for hanging in there everyone, and thanks for the offer LPJ! I'll have more news to report soon!

Nick

Good to hear the end of the tunnel is nearing.

Will you be at PaizoCon this year? If so, I will be hunting you down to get you to sign a few things. ;)

I wish! EGADS I wish!

Sadly I'm still in term then - teaching eats my life, even if I love it. I'd love to throw down on some dice in Seattle!

I've got a little group of die-hards here who I play with, but I miss the madness of every night game-a-thons!

Gods I hope! I'm supposed to go to Bali for three weeks right around the con (project for my day job). I'm trying to wrangle the dates so I can hit Gencon and then fly off to Bali right after. Rock!
