Yes.
I really love the genre, the conceit (oh no! We're fantasy westerners who are strangers to fantasy Japan!), and the unique cosmological stuff. I haven't run it yet, so I don't feel like I can give a full review (there's nothing like running something to find the issues you don't see when you read, IME). But I definitely felt like it was worth the money based on reading enjoyment. Also, my reading was back in Dec, so my comments are memory-based. I do remember seeing some issues that better editorial work would have fixed.
I've read a couple of things about the unique cosmology that has my interest piqued. If you can recall from memory, what was it that caught your attention? Given the content you get for such a decent price, I've been contemplating it and wanted to hear from a familiar source.

What was wrong with New Coke? I mean, it's like saying you don't like the Star Wars prequel movies.
** spoiler omitted **
It's been sooooo long since I've had new coke. Only thing I could remember is that it reminded me of licorice.
I don't dislike the prequel. But it's hard to top the original trilogy. Old school dies hard. :P

Well, the Incredible Hulk movie was certainly better than the regular Hulk movie And Lee made a few years earlier. Beyond that... Uh, Batman Begins was better than the two Batman films before it? It still wasn't as good as the Tim Burton Batmans though...

Good point. My woman wasn't interested in initially watching it, but she actually enjoyed it after the fact. Since she has never watched the original series or first 6 movies, it may not exactly be a fair assessment.
Heck, I'm one of few that really liked Star Trek V.

Old school eventually becomes the new school again. It is why Hollyweird keeps doing reboots.
They're tapped.
Here's how movie pitches worked once upon a time:
"Okay....this is Jaws, in a haunted house, only.....the haunted house is a ship in outer space. and.....look at this weird ass picture by H R Giger. THAT is Jaws."
now, it's....
"HEY! LET'S REDO JAWS, WITH CEEGEE!"

The Thing from Beyond the Edge |

The Thing from Beyond the Edge wrote:I'd like to hear more about this.time to work on my d20 modern/future with FX campaign idea.
Thus begins the Ascension Campaign. the Ascension of the fourth Hujman Empire.
There is interstellar travel. Power Armor, cybernetics, low scale lasers, psionics, plus mutations and genetic enhancements. There are various worlds at differing "progress" levels. There are only a couple of alien races that are not truly malicious. There are also relics of the bygone ages that can still be found in working condition such as superior power armor (mecha), superior robotics/cybernetics, and superior weaponry of various sorts. Such "salvages" are part of what many space explorers hope for.
Very few people realize that magic exists at all. This has a lot to do with the reasoning I chose behind the magic limitation (level of spells limited) in d20 Modern. Something that no one realizes is that there is evidence of civilization that far exceeds the thousands of years of age for the previous human empires and the darkness that lies between them. There were two (or perhaps more...) warring empires who used humans as their fodder and were controlled by two great alien intelligence powers: think Cthulhu Old Gods, or perhaps alien intelligences of Rifts, who had a gazillion hitpoints, super psionic powers and were able to use magic to full effect up to ninth level spells and possibly beyond into epic. They also had spent countless eons with genetic mutations and the "malicious" aliens are genetic constructions made for the ruling of their empires.
So, what may appear at first as the standard "humans are the bad butchers uniting to destroy the good races" cliche storyline (Avatar being an example) is actually the humans killing a lot of really evil critters. However, there will probably be one or two non-evil alien species out there. I would like to lead the characters on into thinking they may become some part of working against that cliche mentioned above only to drop on them how truly evil these species REALLY are. :) Then drop in the resugence/reappearance of the Alien intelligences and the increasing organization of their ancient, evil genetic constructs. :)
Some campaign ideas:
1. Intro is situation similar to Pitch Black: wake up to find themselves crash landed on planet with a few other survivors and must scavenge parts from some other wrecks to fix their ship or get a different wrteck to become spaceworthy. But not with the instant death struggle of that show. As a sidenote this is also basically the introduction of an alien presence in the form of a pact with a warlock among the other survivors...
2. Mutiny aboard the escape craft brought about by the warlock. Immaterial if he is killed because there will be "items" brought back that continue the resurgence of power for the intelligenc(s).
3. Adventures that culminate in learning about the true existence of these powers ala The Sword of Rhiannon inspiration. Party gets sent back in time to the height of these empires and the greatest time of humanity's subjugation. Basically D&D with a smattering of super-technology. They would possibly participate in leading to the downfall of these creatures in the past and/or gain access to weapons/information to help put them down in the future. Possibly simultaneously accidentally bringing back with them agents of the intelligences who would be intent upon hurrying the return of their masters once they appear in the present.
That about sums it up so far.

Star Trek was not bad. It was a good action movie but it is a bad sci fi movie and a horrible Star Trek movie. Over all not bad waiting for the next one to see if they actually do something with the characters or maybe take some of the ideas from the old show and turn them into movies.
I enjoyed the movie as well. I have yet to decide, however, if I'm going to purchase it on Bluray. I heard there's an extra scene with Klingons.
