Planescape: Torment

Video Games

It is the Main Page article for Wikipedia for December 12! :)

What, no comments? :)

I'd readily say it's the best D&D RPG I ever played on a computer.

+10

I loved Torment, but the combat aspect of the game was very weak. The way the camera was zoomed in so close to your characters and how loose it all seemed made combat sometimes frustrating. But for storytelling and how well they pulled off the wacky setting and concept, it's incredible.

Gods I wish I could find a copy. Best characters in a RPG ever. (Close second being Baldur's Gate)

I finally ordered myself a copy of this only yesterday and am excitedly waiting for it to arrive. So it's great timing for it to show up as a featured article!

I imagine shipping would be horrendous to the states, but the website I found it at it below if anyone's interested.

If you've got a hankering for old games, check out GOG.com (good old games) or Steam. I picked up LOOM and The Secret of Monkey Island for $15 from Steam and had a better time than I've had with several modern games.

...Please, I just want somebody to take the license for LOOM and make a fuller, longer, game out of it. On my DS. SO MUCH COOL BACKGROUND STORY that we only got hints of in the game and in the manual.

LOVE. THAT. GAME.

I've never really used Steam, but I definitely second the recommendation for GOG.com. I'm playing through Simon the Sorceror off there at the moment and having a lot of fun with it. I couldn't stop myself from getting Realms of Arkania and Battle Chess too! Fun and nostalgia all in one package. :D

I'd love to see LOOM on the DS too. It's one of the only Lucas Arts games that I never played originally. I've been playing a lot of the old adventures lately since I found SCUMMVM, which lets me run all of my old adventure games easily!

The Exchange

I think I may have played this for an hour or so but the picture was so dark I coudl not accomplish anything.

Torment was a really good game, even better story.

The Exchange

I might have to give it a whirl again then.

Find a good DOS emulator and you should be fine!

I have a good DOS emulator, so I might have to do so. I just never got to see it well since it was so dark to me. Might just be my eye sight, who knows.

For Torment, you don't need a DOS emulator (I don't even know if it would work on DOS at all...), but if you have problems with the darkness of the game, you could try to change the Gamma Rate into the Game options (under Video). Of course, the entire graphic could become too much bright if you change the Gamma brightness too much, so it's really a matter of personal taste and tweaking.

Just my 2c.

Ah, and the story is by far IMHO the most compelling and interesting in the whole CRPG game history !!! Every time I hear (or even, remember !) the BGM that plays when you meet Annah... it makes me shiver by delight and melancholy! Man, I've all goose bumps even now just by thinking of it !

The game was just officially re-released in the UK as well. And the game came out in 1999, a long time after the Age of DOS. It runs fine under XP and Vista for most people, although fiddling may be required. The new budget version of the game has also been apparently tweaked to make it work more smoothly with XP, Vista and W7.

As for combat, PLANESCAPE TORMENT is designed around character interaction and roleplaying. I could be wrong, but from what I remember there are very, very few unavoidable combat situations in the game. You should be able to talk your way out of almost every problem. Although you can't complete the whole game without killing anyone, which is what made DEUS EX interesting.
