New names for focuses

Round 1: Cavalier and Oracle

RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32

I've noticed a lot of discussion of new names for focuses, since it's a taken term in D&D already. "Mysteries" has been suggested and is fairly popular, but let's see what else we can come up with.

  • Spheres
  • Orders
  • Totems/Fetishes
  • Books
  • Studies
  • Practices
  • Disciplines
  • Inspirations
  • Masteries
  • Radiances
  • Insights (might work as an alternate term for Revelations)
  • Idioms - possibly with reflavoring; each idiom sees magic as working a different way, which would allow concept broadening - Fire Idiom not just fire blasts, but abilities that burn impurities from allies (Break Enchantment) and burn out their foes (Enervation)
  • Obsessions
  • Convergences
  • Unities
  • Gifts (another Revelation alternative as well) - So that oracles are "battle-gifted" or "fire-gifted".
  • Pivots or Fulcrums or Centers

  • RPG Superstar 2010 Top 16

"These divine vessels are granted power without their choice, selected by providence to wield powers that even they do not fully understand."

With that in mind I could go with Spheres, Inspirations or Gifts, but probably not the others you listed.

Others which might work from my perspective:

  • Affect
  • Agony
  • Auspice
  • Calling
  • Edict
  • Embodiment
  • Font/Fount
  • Impulse
  • Investiture
  • Influence
  • Passion
  • Urge

Bold = I particularly like this one.
Italic = Has a potentially confusing homonym.
My two favorites fall into the latter category too, dammit. :)
