Con increases retroactive?

Rules Questions

Hey folks. I did a quick search and found nothing.

Basically, are Constitution increases retroactive to total HP similar to how the Toughness feat works?

Or does the increase only effect you from when you have the increase?

Essentially follow the rules for Temporary ability score increase. Con score increases would turn up nothing because its all under temporary ability score increases.

I should have been more clear, sorry!

I started with 16 Con. At level 4 I increased it to 17. Level 8 is coming up, where my con will permanently go up to 18.

This is why I am unclear on this.

Yes the increased bonus HP you would get are retroactive, so you would gain a total of 11 bonus HP for this level and then 4 more at each level after as normal. At least that's the way me and everyone else I know does it.

Thanks! I re-read Dissinger's post after yours, and I see now that he was telling me. I just wasn't understanding til your post outlines it more for me.

Thanks both.

In 3.p, ability changes are retroactive even for Int changes and skills.

So, yes, you gain Con you gain retroactive HPs.

Well I can't give you a page number because I just have access to the PRD at the moment, but if you check the Glossary, under Ability Score Bonuses, you'll find the following:

From the PRD wrote:
Permanent Bonuses: Ability bonuses with a duration greater than 1 day actually increase the relevant ability score after 24 hours. Modify all skills and statistics related to that ability. This might cause you to gain skill points, hit points, and other bonuses. These bonuses should be noted separately in case they are removed.

It's worth noting that Int boosting magic items such as the Headband of Vast Intelligence also explicitly add an appropriate number of skill points by maxing out a single skill per +2 bonus of the item.

Which basically tells you where the bonus skill points you gain from wearing it go. You don't also get additional skill points, those skill points are the ones the hat grants when it was designed.
