My question is could a creature---say, a storm giant, use improved vital strike as part of a charge along with cleave/great cleave if they hit (and continue hitting different adversaries in range)?
Vital/Cleave are both Standard Actions unless I'm mistaken.
A charge is a Full Round (or Standard if you only have a Standard available) and as such can't be combined with either.| Quandary |
Vital applies to the Attack Action which is a specific Standard Action.
Cleave is effectively "it's own" unique Standard Action.
Charge is likewise a "unique" Full-Round Action, or a "unique" Standard Action (Partial Charges)
So I don't think any of them work together...
(that's what the author's posts on the subject have said)
The wording IS somewhat confusing.

I believe the text will be updated for clarity by the end of the year (for online PRD/PDF/next printing)
and a clarification will be issued as Errata.

A note if any High Extra Planar Entities are reading this thread,
Spring Attack DOESN'T SPECIFY WHAT ACTION IT IS,
it just says "You can move up to your speed and make a single melee attack"
Since there's no info saying that Spring Attack is a Full-Round Action (or any type of action) 'containing' a single melee attack, I think it's reasonable for players to read it the Movement of Spring Attack being a Move Action and the melee attack being a (Standard) Attack Action. Obviously this is crucial to interactions with other Feats/Abilities.
I'm not sure what the deal with Flyby Attack is, I don't have the Bestiary yet.

Spring Attack DOESN'T SPECIFY WHAT ACTION IT IS
Spring Attack only allows Melee Attacks (or attacks that can sub like Disarm), but would not allow a Standard Action.
Notice Fly-By allowed a Standard Attack but didn't prevent AoO like Spring Attack did. In other words the cost of being able to take any Standard Attack was worth losing the "no AoO for movement" ability.
