negative intelligent and skill ranks

Liberty's Edge

If a character has negative Int penalty say -2, can he ever gain skill ranks if he is of the fighter or sorcerer class other then favorite class bonus?

When you make the above 1st level character does he get any skill ranks at all to start with the class of fighter or sorcerer?

I knew it was in there somewhere. I just couldn't find that rule that a character gets a min of 1.

Yeah I was the same way about HP, took me awhile before someone pointed out its in Page 12 under Hit Dice.

Interesting point, they roll monster HD if you start with monster levels but if the first is from a class, its always maxed.

So even NPCs get max HP at 1st when staring with a class. Interesting.
I wonder if they get favored class bonus +1 hp or skill point as well?

Here is another variation on the question. A character gets skill points for class + INT modifier (Minimum One) and then they MAY get a bonus for favored class and race.

So does a fighter with a 5 INT who is human and have fighter as his favored class get {(2-3) Min One} +1 (human) +1 (Favored) for three skill points or is it 2+1+1-3 for one skill point?

In my game I have ruled that it falls under the first clause to allow the low INT character to gain the benefit of both his race and class choices. If he had made a Half-Orc fighter and then multi-classes he would have the one skill point. While the human that stayed pure fighter would continue to gain the bonus skill points.

You would add everything together (bonuses and penalties), then figure out if you needed to apply a minimum of 1. While it does "negate" the racial penalty I don't see it as a problem considering that by most rules you shouldn't be allowed to get lower than a -2 Int score (7 Int). If your Int is that low you deserve only 1 SP per level.

I may be wrong about this, but only the base humanoid races get a favored class. In addition the favored class would need to be a class (not monstrous hit dice). As to your question, yes all NPCs (NPC class or PC class) should have the +1 hp or skill point bonus.

This may be true, but it would be a departure from 3.5 if so, on both counts.

A "7 INT HUMAN" would always get 3 Skill Points as long as they remained in their favored class and took the Skill Point, not the Hit Point.

Same applies to HALF-ELF, but they could Multiclass 2 Favored classes.

The first senerio is exactly right, as his Int bonus (penalty) is added as a class feature, the Fighter description awards Skill points : 2 + Int mod. After the character receives that, a human would gain his racial bonus of 1 per level, and a pathfinder favored class could take a bonus of 1 per level. (2 - 3 = -1 Min 1) + 1 + 1 = 3
